Am thinking it's time for a new one because there is ineviably some sort of electrical failure that causes it to beep.

Since the safety of your home depends on these working, I recommend you replace it and don't try to go on the cheap.

Constant beeping means the smoke detector has reached its lifespan. Time for a new one.
