I use an empty tissue box to store my yarn in while knitting. The plastic around the pop up opening holds it in place and helps to keep it from tangling.

I just want to say to all the comments above. *Great ideas* I have never thought of any idea before now, On how to manage my yarn. And I have been crocheting for "YEARS." Where is my creativity! That's why I read Thrifty Fun!! :) Thank you all for your wonderful ideas!
