Unclogging a Toilet

I need advice! I have two toilets (back to back) that are clogged. I have had 4 plumbers try to fix it with no luck. The last guy snaked it all the way to the septic. He recommends I replace the toilets. I have asked around for opinions and I have not had anyone endorse the "toilet replacement idea". Can you please give me suggestions?

This totally worked! We tried for hours upon hours to get it unclogged and I stumbled upon this as a last resort before calling the plumber. We took about 1/2 cup of dawn dish soap and a pail of hot (not boiling) water and within about 10 plunges, done! Thank you so much. (02/23/2009)

I found out that you can sometimes get toilets and sinks unclogged by running a hose down the vents on top of the roof or you can also snake them out. Sometimes these vents do get clogged up and can not vent if they are clogged. (03/05/2009)

You have a lot of good advice here, but I had problems with the upstairs bathroom for over 3 months. My husband would just keep unstopping it, but a couples of days later we would have the same problems. I had to call a plumber, they got a pair of boys underwear out of the toilet, 2 toothbrushes, and one GI Joe plastic army man! I really hated paying for this but I really had no choice. (03/07/2009)

This is hard to believe but the liquid soap and pot of boiling hot water remedy actually worked. I was about to spend money until I thought about checking the Internet. Don't knock it 'til you try it. Whoever posted this remedy, thank you! (03/07/2009)

I had to add to this long list of posts. My daughter is notorious at clogging up our toilet. We have had a plumber come I can't count how many times, and replaced the toilet twice. Today when she told me she had put paper towels down there I thought we would have to go through the whole ordeal again, but the dish soap and boiling water worked. I actually ran out of dish soap so I used some cascade dish washing liquid and by about the 4th or 5th pot of boiling water, it worked! So it may take awhile, a few tries, and some frustration, but sooner or later it works. Thanks so much! (03/14/2009)

I spent 6 hours trying to get the toilet unclogged. I tried everything. Then I tried the boiling water and liquid soap, it worked perfectly. Thank you so much! =] (03/21/2009)

We snaked, used Drano, tried bleach...it was horrible. I tried the advice from this site and poured liquid dish soap into the bowls. I waited, poured hot water. Plunged and more hot water and was able to clear both toilets! I could not believe it. I am amazed and thrilled to save the cost of a plumber! (03/28/2009)

Yet another testimonial: I had a very stubborn clog this morning (just plain old toilet paper + normal waste) and when I flushed, the water nearly spilled over. After 30 min of plunging in vain, I tried adding 1/2 cup of Palmolive dish soap and (carefully) 4 L of hot tap water (about a gallon). I let it sit for 10-15 min...no change. But what a difference when I plunged it--there was no resistance and after 5 plunges, I heard that satisfying Woosh. Thank you everyone! I am a skeptic no more. (04/14/2009)

I worked for an hour trying to unclog my toilet. I had spent an hour unclogging it last week too. This time, it wouldn't budge. I tried the hot water and soap method. It took an hour with letting the soap and water sit for 15 minutes and then having to add 4 more buckets of very hot water and another 1/2 cup of soap, but it finally worked. Whew! (04/29/2009)

Thank you! I tried the soap and hot water and the first time it didn't change anything, in the second addition of hot water I added a can of coke - 5 minutes later the bowl drained and when I plunged again it cleared! (05/02/2009)

Throw away the Drano, Liquid Plumber, RidX and other useless stuff. I spent more than 15 bucks and almost 10 hrs (5 pm - 3 am) in vain to unclog my toilet. All the above products were useless. When I looked at the products carefully, they all said "Good for Prevention". Then I came across this website and found the liquid dish soap and hot water solution.

And boy, it works darn good. I used Palmolive liquid dish soap, let it sit for 15 minutes and poured a bucket of hot tap water. Then used the plunger (6-7 pushes).Whoosh. What a relief. Thanks to all those people who suggested this brilliant idea, plus it saved me the plumber cost. (05/15/2009)

One other suggestion I'd like to make (not sure if it's been said or not), but I used to be an apartment manager and often had to be the maintenance woman too. The plunger you use is very important. Get one of those that looks like an accordion. They are much more powerful and often unclog a toilet in one quick plunge way before any other kind will touch it. (05/17/2009)

My toilet was clogged this morning and I spent over an hour trying to unclog it. Then I stumbled upon this website and tried the dishwasher detergent + hot water. Kaboom, toilet was breathing again.

Here's what I did:
1 cup of dollar store dishwasher + 1 bucket of hot tap water, wait 15 min., use regular plunger. After 10 plunges, the toilet cleared. (05/24/2009)

Unclogging a Toilet

A couple of weeks ago my 2 yr old flushed his plastic fish down the toilet. We tried everything! So today I was about to give up because everyday we were doing something to the toilet and we did not want to call a plumber. I got online and started searching then came across this website. I really thought it was stupid. Yeah right this will work, dish soap. I didn't believe it at all. I do now! I do not have the words to express how this helped. I tried everything I could possibly think of. I bought several different types of drain de-cloggers. All I did was poured a 16fl oz bottle of Palmolive, boiling water, and flushed. The water went down so fast I could not believe it. I thank everyone on the website for their advice and help. This is a keeper! (06/02/2009)
