My Merritt double speed sewing machine's thread breaks when thick material is stitched. What do I do?

Check to be sure you're using the right thread and correct needle size - particularly the needle size. What you're describing is most likely being caused by using the wrong thread and or needle. Check your user guide or any good sewing reference book (Simplicity, Singer, Butterick-Vogue) or do an online search for 'correct thread and needle sizes for (insert the fabric type you want to sew)'.
