Washable No-Sew Mask - woman wearing the maskYou can make this washable, reusable no-sew face mask at home. If you use something like a handkerchief, you won't even need to cut it. Aside from being able to wash this, it's also beneficial in the way that you can make it custom to your face shape to ensure you're covered over the nose and under the chin.

This has been done for generations in our family. It always helped me a lot with my allergies when we would do family gardening days. Thanks to my mother for passing this on, and for modeling here. This is Grandpa's 10"x10" handkerchief. :)

Total Time: 5 minutes

Yield: 1 mask

Supplies:

Washable No-Sew Mask - white handkerchief

Steps:

  1. Fold material in half.
  2. Washable No-Sew Mask - fold handkerchief in half

  3. Fold material twice more so it's a long rectangle.
  4. Washable No-Sew Mask - fold in half twice more

  5. Fold the sides into the center. Tuck one side into the other. It will stay in place.
  6. Washable No-Sew Mask - fold sides to center and fit one end into the other

  7. Loop the elastic material through the sides of the mask, but don't tie yet. Place mask material on your face then see how much elastic you will need to go around your ears. Cut elastic to proper length.
  8. Washable No-Sew Mask - loop elastic through the ends and check fit for elastic length

  9. Tie the ends of the bands to secure.
  10. Washable No-Sew Mask - elastic cut and tied

  11. Place mask on face, pulling the elastic around your ears. Pull at the top and bottom edges so the mask is custom-fit. Make sure your nose and chin are covered. Wash after each use.
  12. Washable No-Sew Mask - once in place you will gently pull the top and bottom to adjust to fit over nose, mouth, and chin

Hi Karen! Make sure when you fold it and tuck it into itself, that when you try holding it up against your face before you tie it on, it fits all your face. So, not too narrow. I'm attaching another method of folding if you have a bit of a smaller piece of material.

Another folding technique. This is a smaller handkerchief.
