Are my dogs that are 1 and 2 years old at risk if I recently had a puppy die of parvo?
If you have kept up with your dogs shots and kept them vaccinated then you should be fine. Normally, you see signs of a dog being sick within 48 to 72 hours, at times it is much quicker that you'll notice the dog not eating or throwing up.
My puppy is 8 weeks old and has had one parvo shot. He was around another puppy all day and that puppy has parvo. Can my puppy get it? Also my 1 year dog also was around the parvo puppy.
Puppies should not be allowed to socialize with other dogs or frequent areas where other dogs have been until 2 weeks after they have had their last vaccination. ... Dogs that develop parvo will show symptoms 3-10 days after being exposed. Symptoms include: vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea (usually bloody), and fever.
You may want to talk to your pup's vet and see if there is anything preventive that can be done or if one dose of the vaccine is enough to start the immunity process.
Prayers that your pup stays healthy!
In the meantime, be sure to keep your sweet baby away from other dogs just in case, G-d forbid that he is in the disease incubation stage.
Post back how things go. Prayers all around!!!!
Hi,
If your puppy shows no signs of the virus for up to ten days, then it will probably not get Parvo.
Even if it shows signs continue with the vaccinations and take your pup to the vet.
Was the exposure at your home? If you have not already, then clean all the contaminated areas with bleach. Bleach will destroy a lot of the virus. Let the bleach sit on the floor for a while, 10-15 minutes or so.
Give the puppy chicken, along with its food, and eventually offer less dry food and more chicken. This should help it digest more easily and get the nutrients into its body which should boost its immunity.
If the puppy gets symptoms, and I hope it does not, then the idea is to keep the puppy hydrated while this virus runs its course, which is about 3 to 6 weeks.
Usually the puppy will be through with the virus in three weeks. After all this clean all the areas again, with bleach before introducing other puppies.
Older dogs are safer from exposure to Parvo since their immune systems are more developed.
Cuddle your baby and keep the puppy de-stressed. Enjoy every minute with your puppy!
Blessings,
---Robyn
My dog was in contact with a dog that recently died of parvo. I believe my dog caught the parvo virus, but was able to fight it off as she has been vaccinated. I'm worried that she is still carrying the virus from the other dog even though it's not affecting her. Is this the case? Or has she fought it off completely? Is she safe to be around other dogs or is she likely to still be carrying parvo?
so you are afraid that she might be a canine Typhoid Mary?
Thankfully this seems not to be the case. According to this vet, this does not really happen for much more than 3 weeks www.askavetquestion.com/
although the virus stays in the area for a good year
i'm glad for you that your dog made it
From everything I know, a vaccinated dog does not carry or shed the virus. A dog that has had parvo and recovered is immune for life. The Vet you took your dog to should be glad to answer your questions via a phone call for no charge.
My 2 yr old dog, who I am sure is unvaccinated, has recently been in close contact with a dog sick with parvo at our home. Is it safe for me to have her get the vaccine now or will this just further expose her to the virus and cause her to catch it?
Your vet is your best source for information and protection for your sick and the exposed pup. Contact them immediately so you have a plan to care for both and prevent further exposure/spreading of the parvo. Be sure to follow the instructions to the letter so both pups have the best chance for the best outcomes!
If you need a vet, contact your local humane society or rescue and they can point you in the right direction.
Sending up prayers and healing wishes!!
Call your Vet right away. She can answer your question and tell you what signs to look for in your exposed dog.. You should also look into how to clean the areas the sick dog visited, so your dog, or others are not exposed again.
