Chocolate Shortcake


  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 2 sticks margarine
  • 4 Tbsp. cocoa
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • Ad
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla


  • 1 stick margarine
  • 4 Tbsp. cocoa
  • 6 Tbsp. buttermilk
  • 1 lb. powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 cup chopped nuts, opt.


Sift together dry ingredients. Melt and margarine and add cocoa and water. Bring this mixture to a rolling boil. Add to dry ingredients along with remaining ingredients. Pour this mixture into a greased and floured sheet cake pan. Bake 20 minutes at 400 degrees F. While cake bakes, make icing which is spread on cake as soon as it is removed from oven.

or Icing: Melt margarine and add cocoa and buttermilk together. Bring these ingredients to a rolling boil, then add remaining ingredients. Mix and frost. Sprinkle chopped nuts, if desired.
