Croutons

Low Cost and Low Fat. This recipe can be personalized by using different spices, different amounts of spices, different bread, different spray, and different crisping times. This can be a fun family project and can be used as a delicious and nutritious snack in addition to being a salad topping.

Ingredients

  • 4 slices of bread (we use white)
  • non-stick Cooking Spray, butter flavored
  • Mrs. Dash - original blend
  • garlic powder
  • garlic salt

Directions

Put bread out to stale for at least 12 hours. We recommend putting the bread in the microwave or oven (NOT turned on) to stale in a safe and clean environment. Slice bread into cubes. We slice into 16 cubes per slice of bread. In a large bowl, combine the 3 spices. Quantity of each spice depends on your preferred taste. Place cubes in a single layer on a cookie sheet. Liberally spray cubes with nonstick spray. Then flip each cube and spray the other side. This will help the spices adhere to the bread. Toss sprayed cubes in bowl of spices until each cube is covered with spices. Place spiced cubes in a single layer on the cookie sheet. Place cookie sheet back in microwave or oven. Check on the cubes every hour or so, flipping as needed to thoroughly crisp the cubes to desired crunchiness.

Optional: Once cubes are spiced, you can finish crisping the cubes by putting them in the oven at 250 degrees F until desired crunchiness.

Pour any remaining spice mix into a lidded canister to reuse the next time you make a batch of croutons.
