Painting an Fuel Oil Tank?

I need to paint my fuel oil tank. Fuel oil was recently spilled on the tank so new paint won't stick. How do I clean the oil off of it before I paint it?

Here are some options:

use a laquer thinner on a rag and wipe off.

Use a carwash soap or liquid soap with a grease cutter in it.

OR go ahead and paint it with an oil based paint,
this way it will stick and future stains will wipe off.

Good Luck.

Brake cleaner is the only thing Ive found that will clean up fuel oil. Make sure you have good ventilation. Spray brake cleaner on paper towel & wipe.

Also, Nok-Out is the only product Ive found that removes fuel oil/gasoline smell from skin, clothes, washer/dryer, etc. Can be purchased on-line.

Dawn dishwashing detergent is used by public works to clean up fuel oil from pavement.
