Composting Dog Waste?

How do I compost cat and dog waste, in a small garden? Can I put it by my roses or by my raspberry bush?

Hardiness Zone: 7a

According to the USDA's booklet, you can use fully composted dog waste on your garden because composting kills harmful pathogens. But you must do the composting correctly. Oops, NOT to be used on crops for human consumption. Sorry about that.

Download your booklet here: www.ak.nrcs.usda.gov/compost.html.

Do not compost animal feces unless you dig a deeeep hole to do so. Your animals are carnivores and meat does not decompose well.

You can read about it on the blog for "You Bet Your Garden" at www.whyy.org

I agree, do not compost animal feces. Feces carry diseases that can harm other animals. I know of no composting book that recommends even burying animal feces.

Do not use dog feces on anything edible!
