Free or Low Cost Veterinary Services in Philadelphia?

My son went into the USMC and we are taking care of his Husky, Indy. Well since we didn't get Indy neutered as our son didn't want that for whatever reason he has developed tumors by his rectum.

We went to a vet hospital and they said it would cost us over $1000 to remove the tumors as well as castrate him so the problem would not return. We already paid over $500 for tests and blood work, etc., but we absolutely can't afford the operation and we have lousy credit due to overdue and late payments on bills in the past. And that was on account of my husband not having work. You see he has been in the carpet industry for 22 years, but it slowed down and we're hurting financially.

Are there any Drs out there willing to do Pro bono work or volunteer work? any clinics, Vet hospitals that could help our Indy? He is otherwise in good health and about 7 yrs old. We live in southeastern PA about 20 minutes from Philadelphia. Please help.

I'm sorry to hear that Indy has tumors. Since it's your son's dog, can he send some money for Indy's treatment? Or, my dad retired from the Army, and we used to take our dogs to the vet clinic on base. I don't remember if it was free, or discounted to take them there. Since your son is in the Marines, and it's his dog, would there be a way for you to take his dog to their clinic?

I hope you find a solution soon. Best of luck!

I live about 12 miles outside of Philadelphia and you can get low cost vet services at the SPCA. I don't know how good the vets are but my FIL has used them. Call some local vets, explain the situation and maybe one will do it for a military man. It can't hurt to try. My vet did a no fee for a puppy I fostered that was deathly ill and the rescue was broke and we take all 6 of our pets to him.

I would contact the national ASPCA and tell them your story! It's very possible they will help 100% for what your son's beloved poochie needs while he is away! God Bless your son for serving our country and God bless you!

ASPCA General Phone Number: (212) 876-7700 during normal business hours, Monday-Friday, 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. EST

Please let us know what you find out!

If there is a college with a veterinary sciences program near you, they often have low cost services, I dont know the area but it would be worth calling around. Where I live we have had to drive to the other side of the state but we saved a boatload. Good luck!
