Music to Soothe Your Pets

Listening to soothing music is an excellent stress reducer for humans. The same is true with animals. If your dog has anxiety issues when left alone, leaving classical music playing during your absence can reduce your dog's anxiety. Dogs and cats that tend to have hyperactive personalities or noise related fears can often be calmed with soothing music.

Birds, hamsters, and numerous other caged animals also respond to classical music or to specific instruments. Flutes and harps are possibly the most soothing sounds for pets. Music can also be a vital part of the healing process for a sick or injured pet.

On a personal note, I have a CD of meditation music that features the traditional Japanese flute. All of my pets are lulled into a state of relaxation or sleep within a few minutes of listening to this music. They relax with various selections of classical music and CDs designed for pet relaxation, but the reaction time to this CD is much quicker and longer lasting. When you find the music or sounds that your pet responds to, play it often for them, especially whenever you detect anxiety, fear, or stress in your pet. You may discover this music will also relieve your stress and allow you to relax.

My golden is stressed by high winds. {Our home is very old and drafty!} If I need to leave I alway turn on light classical music (on the cable radio). It seems to sooth her....

My vet plays Enya, "Shepard Moons". She says the cats like it. I have the same CD here at home. I said I'd play it for my cats..... I still have to.

This absolutely works. I am babysitting my sons two cats for a month. They get lots of attention and play time, but get a little cranky with each other. I turned on one of the music cable channels to meditation flute music. When I returned a couple hours later everybody was relaxed and/or sleeping.

I tried leaving talk radio on one afternoon and when I checked on them, they were jumpy and batting at each other. We didn't do that again. Now when I turn their favorite channel on (the meditation music) they just close their eyes and go to sleep. Well most of the time anyway.
