Can you freeze a whole turnip?

Most people recommend blanching them and then cutting into smaller pieces before freezing. But some gardeners recommend leaving them in the ground through the winter, which would result in frozen turnips so maybe it could work out. But you will have to thaw it and then cut it into pieces so it might be better to do that work at the start so you can add frozen pieces directly to whatever stew or soup you are making.
