How do you remove black hair dye from skin?

How to get Hair dye off your skin

I am a hair dresser and please don't use bleach and Magic Eraser type products on your face. While dying your hair if spots of color get onto other parts of your face use more color and rub off the spot and wipe with a dry towel, color takes off color. Then when you are rinsing it out put only a little bit of water and scrub your scalp and forehead like the dye is shampoo using your fingertips. If all else fails use hand sanitizer or any thing with alcohol. (11/01/2007)

Hairspray really works. Just spray it on the area that the colour has touched. Leave it for a few seconds. But don't let it dry. Then wipe it off. You may need to do it a few times. (11/01/2007)

I use milk soaked on cotton wool. It works great on smooth skin, i.e your neck, ears, face, and arms. (I didn't bother covering up with a towel). Milk is not great on hand creases though. I punctured my gloves and now have black dye between my thumb and index creasy bit.

I have only dyed my hair once, but my friend's mom did it and because getting the stain off was so easy, I never thought that getting the dye off was an issue. She let me have this stuff -let me get the bottle- okay. This stuff worked really well. I had my hair really black black, and had stains in quite a few visible places.

It's called Roux Clean Touch Hair-Color Stain Remover. The sticker says you can get it at Sally Beauty Supply for $3.49. It worked really well and it even got a few drops of stain out of my shirt. Hope this helps. (11/09/2007)

I dye my hair purple (permanent, from a salon) and for the first week or so, I never wash my hair to keep it looking hot. This means I'll wake up every morning with my face, hands and body purple, and I use any brand of laundry stain remover. (11/20/2007)

I dyed my friend's hair black earlier tonight. Her hair looks beautiful, but I got black dye all over her face and ears. I felt awful! We tried make up remover, soap, nail polish remover, astringent, toner, her skin was peeling but the dye wouldn't budge. She refused to try bleach so we put our faith in toothpaste. It worked beautifully! Thanks for the tips! (11/28/2007)

Use Gojo Natural Orange Pumice Hand Cleaner. It works great (doesn't get it all off though). I used Fantastik and Lysol as well as, bleach the night I got the dye on there, but it didn't much work at all. But use Gojo and a good sponge and you'll be good. I think you can find Gojo at any car store, you probably have it already, under your sink or in your garage. That's where I found mine. Glad I can help. (01/01/2008)

Use Bleach!!!

Bleach, bleach, bleach! It works. No need to try anything else. I had my entire hand covered in dye that sat for a day and I tried putting about 1/2 cup of bleach in a disposable cup and put in another 1/2 cup of water. It worked in approx. 2 minutes (even under the nails) and it did not hurt at all since it was diluted. I washed my hands with dish washing detergent afterwards to remove the smell. All better!

Editor's Note: Like we have said before, bleach is tough on skin and can be absorbed. Please dilute it about 1 part bleach to 10 parts water if you want to try this. (01/06/2008)

The best way is to avoid stains in the first place! I saw a new product in Cosmo called Repelle. I'm a big stainer so it caught my attention and I got it at Walgreens. The product works great, Its a stick you just swipe on before color to protect from the dye ... and no stains! (02/12/2008)

I'm not sure how to get it off; but I have a tip for next time. If you get dye on your skin don't immediately apply a wet rag. Water is the worst thing. Just simply use shampoo and it comes right off. (03/01/2008)

I don't suggest that you use bleach or cleaning products or any other concoctions. I used whitening toothpaste and left it on the stained area for 10-15 minutes. It rubbed right off. Just toothpaste, no ashes, no baking soda, nothing else. It works, but you have to give it time! (03/02/2008)

Always rub Vaseline into neck face ears before you start this will help, and to remove the dye from your skin use a towel with Surgical Spirit, it works a treat! Be careful not to rub to hard, gentle circular movements with the towel doused in surgical spirit! You only need to scrub when you are washing off the surgical spirit, use a gentle, mild shower gel with aloe vera or vitamin E. This process should hopefully remove all the dye. (07/23/2008)

I've got another salon-lash dyeing-horror story as well. Tried the ash, it worked well thank god. I'm going to see relatives for Thanksgiving in 2 days so I am very relieved. I covered eye area with jojoba oil and iced a bit afterwards. I hated to do the scrubbing on my eye area. I would NOT put alcohol or astringent or surface cleaner around my eyes let alone my face or body. That'll leave you red and irritated for days and could do some permanent damage to that delicate skin of yours. Remember - the dye WILL fade off in a few days (however excruciating).

I've never tried to remove hair dye stains from skin, but I've noticed that fingers get stained when you cut boiled beets or peel eggplants, and that the stain was accidentally removed by fresh lemon juice.

ReaLemon brand lemon juice, with unlimited shelf life, also removed those stains.

It's the acid that removed the stains from my fingers, but don't rub lemon juice, either fresh or canned, on skin that's been rubbed with an abrasive material. If you do, you'll be unhappy. (02/04/2009)

How to Get Hair Dye off of Skin

OK guys, the secret is finally here for removing hair dye, after using cigarette ashes, toothpaste after toothpaste, salts, Dawn dish liquid, alcohol, and so many other things that we could not get to remove the dye. The best thing that worked for us was... DRUM ROLL... Fast Orange hand cleaner. You can but this at your local Wal-mart for $3 for a large jug. It removes and fades hair dye really well, I would say about 85-95%, which is amazing. Also, another good tool was a pumice stone, which you can get a good combo one for about $2. But the best idea still is to buy good latex gloves from for a couple bucks, and rub a little Vaseline all over your hands to add extra protection! Good Luck! (02/07/2009)

How to get hair dye (black no1 even) off skin.

I have little experience dyeing hair. I went for black as black could be. Colored my hair wonderfully, also colored half the bathroom and half my face. I came to this list for help and was apprehensive about super harsh chemicals and ashes and toothpaste and lemon juice near my eyes. So I went for my dish/hands soap and *pateew* zapped it like a laser beam. I used Dawn Direct Foam. It's the kind that's a real thin liquid until you pump it and then if foams up. It is super concentrated, I think that may have been the key. Oh, and the hotter the water I used (wash cloth and q-tip with the foam) the faster it came off. Remember this was with black no1! Good luck (02/18/2009)

How to Get Hair Dye off of Skin

This sounds crazy but it really works, I dyed my hair jet black and it was all over my face, neck hands, etc. So what I did was got 1 egg white and mixed it with some vinegar and and added 2 drops of Tabasco sauce, the vinegar neutralizes the colour, the Tabasco restores natural pigment and the egg white protects the skin from being nipped and allows the other ingredients to be used together, leave it on for 5 minutes and wash off with warm water and soap and it doesn't leave a single mark, tried and tested.
