I have a 2 year old Pug-a-poo, Molly. She is getting fat. I don't know if she takes after the Pug, broad chest and heavy or not. She will not eat dry food unless I mix it with canned. She's 11 lbs, gained 2 lbs in the last year. You can grab fat , I guess it's fat, if you 'pinch an inch'. I feed her small amounts, 1/2 cup of mixed, twice a day. And she gets treats which I am cutting out.

When my pug was over weight my doctor told me to feed her once a day, no treats. The diet was fish and rice, I believe it was 1/2 cup of rice and 1/4 cup of cooked fish. I thought it would be expensive, but if you purchase the cheapest fish at the store it isn't that bad, I may have paid 2 or 3 dollars a pound which lasted several days.
Try a low fat dog food. Also, you feed your little dog the same amount that I feed my active 30 pound dog. Have you considered installing invisible fence? We have been very happy with it because it safely gives our dog the freedom to run. It is easy to install and it's easy to train the dog to use it. It's also not expensive, compared to conventional fencing, and it's not unsightly.
Our vet recommended that we feed animal crackers as treats for our overweight pug.
Definitely do NOT let your dog run loose. It sounds like she's getting enough exercise but you could play ball in the house too. Has she been checked by a vet for an actual health issue that might be causing it? I'd definitely do that. You want to make sure she's healthy. I feed my dogs people food as treats & they love it. I also give them natural dog cookies.
While you are reducing her food intake, she will try to be a thief and sneak food. This makes her amenable to seeing her usual kibble as treats. Or you can use another brand of kibble for treats. Reduce her daily intake if she gets more treats on a given day. As for more effective exercise, you can put canned goods or whatever into a pack on her back, or you can speed up the pace when you walk her by your using Rollerblad skates or a bicycle.
I have owned 3 LH dachshunds - between 12 and 20 lbs. The one I adopted weighing 20 lbs went down to around 17 lbs in a couple of months by feeding him Beneful Weight Control dry food. I feed the two dogs I currently own twice a day about 1/2 cup, no table scraps, only 1 cookie a day. I would recommend that you cut down on her quantity of food (I think dry is better then wet), convert to low cal, and cut out the treats.
I know all about pug-a-poos and I know she used to be cute and tiny but she might have grown in on her pug characteristics and everything. It sounds like your cutting everything out of her diet, and the result, she will be very, very unhappy. If you cut her treats out completely, especially if she has eaten them before.
I feed my 2yr old pug science diet light adult, 1/3cup 2x a day with 2tsp baby food and carrots and or string beans. She seems to keep getting bigger she does not want to walk anymore. What should I do? Could it be her thyroid or something else serious.
