I have a pair of Stiffel brass lamps that are in desperate need of cleaning. I'd like either a good commercial brand of brass cleaner or, better yet, a homemade brass cleaner.

You can make a mixture of ketchup and vinegar and spread it on with a clean cloth. Use 50% ketchup and 50% vinegar. Buff with a towel. (07/18/2006)

Are they antique, or nearly so? If so, don't clean until you contact a reputable furniture restorer or look one up on the Internet. Realize that patina is an important asset. (07/18/2006)

The brasso the military uses is the best thing I have ever seen for brass. All buckles and buttons on uniform are brass and have to shine. A little goes a long way, so well worth the cost of buying. (07/19/2006)

How do I clean a Stiffel lamp, and is there any way of telling if it is brass or plating?

Get a magnet to test the lamp. A magnet will not stick to real brass. (10/29/2009)
