Request: Stains in Toilet

I am looking for a way to clean a yellow stain from the back of a toilet bowl. It was probably caused by slow dripping water. The stain runs vertically from the rim of the toilet down.

How do you get rid of the stain down the front of the toilet (men did this I'm sure)? After being gone for two weeks, I came home to this. I don't need to clean inside of toilet, it's down the front outside, down the whole stem. The products, that clean the inside, don't seem to have any effect on this problem. I have tried almost everything and nothing budges it. Hope someone can help.

Try bleach. I put a little bleach in my toilets once a week, let is still for several hours (tell everyone in the house not to use that toilet) and then scrub if necessary. (08/02/2007)

I love using the black very fine mesh used for sanding sheetrock. It helps remove stains, etc. around sinks, faucets, toilet stains, and any other tough buildup or stain on hard non-porous surfaces. Good Luck. (08/02/2007)

Have you tried Never Scrub, I started using it in October of 2006. I have not had to replace the cartridge yet. It starts cleaning and makes your toilet bowl cleaner.
If you have a mineral buildup in the bottom, it will eventually be removed without scrubbing, but if you can scrub it, it will speed up the process. I just occasionally wipe out the toilet bowl. I no longer have to scrub it, it holds true to its name.
I have no ring or any type of build up anywhere the water touches.

RE: Stains in Toilet
A pumice stone works great! I have used the ones that you can get at dollar stores for one dollar. Just dump a bucket of water into your toilet so that the water level goes WAY down, then rub the stone on the stain. I worried about this ruining the toilet or making it worse, but it actually acts as an eraser and cleans it great. Also, they sell them on sticks for in-ground pools, so any pool supply place should have them although they will be more costly. Hope this helps!

Try Iron Out, its good for toilets, tubs, or dishwashers. You can also use it for laundry. Read the instructions carefully. It can be found in hardware stores, such as Ace Hardware, or in grocery stores near the laundry products. It's really the best. (08/04/2007)

RE: Stains in Toilet
Beware of pumice stone! Here is the information I got from an expert: "Pumice stone does clean, but it also removes some of the enamel and leaves a rougher surface. You can't see it or even feel it, but it happens. Then stains can collect even faster and they have to be rubbed a little harder to get them off. With just normal cleaning the enamel can become thin where it is rubbed the most, leaving dark streaks." I learned this too late. After using a pumice stone for just a few years my two toilets were ruined. (08/27/2007)

I had a serious problem with rust stains, and tried several products and a lot of elbow grease. Some things worked to some extent, but nothing renewed the toilet. I stumbled on something in Walmart called simply "Rust Remover' by a company called Whink. It's one of the rare products that actually did what the label claimed. I poured it in and let it sit a minute, and by the time I tried to go after it with the toilet brush, the stains were already gone. I'd spent hours on that toilet with other products, and couldn't get them out. (08/06/2008)

I have a bad stain in my teen's toilet, right below the top edge of the toilet where it's hard to reach. I've used several different products to try and get this cleaned but they haven't worked. I've used lime away, Clorox Teflon for toilet bowls, etc.
Any suggestions?

Try Wink. You can get it at any hardware store. Lots Of Love, Bonnie (05/10/2001)
RE: Stains in Toilet
Don Aslett (the "cleaning guy") recommends using a toilet pumice. I like this because you're not pouring toxic chemicals into the sewer or septic. Not sure what stores carry them, but you can find one at his website www.cleanreport.com. (05/10/2001)

I've been told that pouring a can of Coke into the toilet and letting it set overnight will remove stains. I've also heard that using Alka Seltzer tablets or denture cleaning tablets help a lot. I've not tried them myself... (05/11/2001)

RE: Stains in Toilet
Try denture cleanser--the kind you put in cup with teeth and soak overnight. It worked for me. (05/15/2001)

RE: Stains in Toilet
I was told some of the Janitorial Supply Stores carry a product called "Pretty Potty" It really works good. You have to wear gloves and have really good ventilation. Good Luck (05/15/2001)

If your stain problem is rust a product called Zud. It comes in a container like cleanser and worked for me. Hope it works for you. (05/21/2001)

I put "LIME-AWAY" in my really bad toilet (My mom said I was going to have to replace it, the stains were so bad!)....in less than 10 minutes, I scrubbed it with a quick swish of the toilet brush...and I was almost done! (04/24/2004)

RE: Stains in Toilet
I found a cleaner that WILL work, or they pay you ten dollars if it fails to work.
Go to: http://www.pollyproducts.bz
If it fails to work, they will pay you ten dollars for your time, or you can order it off the net, at:
http://www.pollyproducts.biz
or it is better to buy it direct as you will get a better price and be able to talk to the owner.

Put vinegar into the toilet and let it sit overnight (or at least a few hours). Put some rubber gloves on and brush off the stains with a toilet bowl scrubber. Works wonders! (10/22/2004)

We built a new house and have lived in it for 16 months. But after only a few short months two of my commodes developed terrible stains in them. I can't seem to get rid of them. I have tried CLR and THE WORKS, besides the normal Comet or toilet bowl cleaner. None have begun to make a difference. My mother used to use some type of industrial cleaner but I don't recall the name of it. Does anyone know of anything that is sure to get them out, or the name of an industrial cleaner I could purchase? (03/26/2005)
RE: Stains in Toilet
We go to the hardware store and get the finest grade of sandpaper that you use in water only. It works wonders for our sink and commodes. Does not harm them..

It sounds weird, but spray a little oven cleaner on the stain and leave it for about 30 min. and wipe clean. Works like a CHARM! (03/26/2005)
RE: Stains in Toilet
I have used ELIMINATE which I purchased at Home Depot. It worked fine; also good for the shower & tub. Be sure to open the window (s) or use the fan for ventilation if you have no windows in your bathrooms.

Peggy,
I am an Independent Watkins Associate (i.e. vanilla, spices, salves, liniments, household cleaners, etc.), and we carry a couple of products that will help you. If you don't like the product(s), there is a 100% money-back guarantee. We have the Watkins Toilet Bowl Cleaner, which is amazing and will take ANYTHING off (I cleaned my sister's and brother's-in-law "shop" toilet which had sat for ages with it, and you wouldn't believe it.) There's also the Bathroom Cleaner Plus, which I think might work well for you as it is thicker and clings to vertical surfaces. This cleaner is also multi-purpose and can be used in the whole bathroom (i.e. tubs, tile, porcelain, grout, and fiberglass), and is made to eliminate rust plus lime and organic deposits. My favorite thing about the Bathroom Cleaner Plus is its cherry/almond fragrance - no bad fumes at all!
I can send you a WATKINS catalog if you want to the look at the products and see what you think.

See if they sell Pumie Heavy Duty Scouring Stick in your area this is really good for stains in toilets. Use as directed on package. I find mine at the dollar stores. (03/29/2005)

RE: Stains in Toilet
I used some spray called "The Works" from Walmart on my son's toilet, it's awesome and it's cost is under a dollar. (04/13/2005)
By liz
RE: Stains in Toilet
The Works is really good but it is so bad on your skin, hair, and ALL metals - it has very awful vapors. You cant clean fiberglass toilet lids with it either.
Pretty Potty is the best so far. It has vapors but it smells SO pleasant and its vapors are minimal (From the acid - all working products need the hydro acid.) That and the use of a pumice stone for those very hard stubborn hard water stains etc. The trick to pumice stones is elbow grease and to keep the pumice stone always wet. (05/07/2005)

RE: Stains in Toilet
I've just tried a lot of the suggestions included here. The oven cleaner just didn't cut it. In the end, the best one was "The Works" but be careful! The active ingredient is hydrochloric acid. It will eat up clothes, sponges, etc. So spills can be a problem. And be sure to wear good rubber gloves. (05/23/2005)

RE: Stains in Toilet
There are dozens of acid type products that remove Ca scale and rust. but all these products take elbow grease after waiting for them to work
I'm looking for a cake that i can put in the tank that will prevent mineral build up before it starts to happen
Everything sold that i can find is Chlorine base and all that does is bleach the mineral deposit white. You can't see it but it's still there. Found a solid cake that I think was citric acid at the dollar store that worked great but they no longer have (08/14/2005)

RE: Stains in Toilet
okay-I squirted some toilet cleaner on my toilet and then I accidentally let it sit there over night, but now there are brownish red streaks where the cleaner was! Is this some kind of weird chemical reaction? How do I get it off?
Editor's Note:Chris, you don't say what the cleaner was which makes it hard to answer. (05/18/2006)

Pumice Pumice Pumice. A pumice stone will get the hard-water mineral stain out of your toilet. I've seen one called "Pumie" for sale before, but I can't always find it in Albuquerque. I've bought a pedicure pumice stone the last time I had to deal with this in one of my rentals. (04/17/2007)

I had a toilet that had stains for 14 years. Add to that a teenage son who didn't clean his toilet. I used Whink (found at Walmart) in combination with a pumice and 14 years of grossness is gone! (04/30/2007)
