First off, I am 14 years old. I want to decorate my room. Not so much I need help decorating, just that I need help with the color schemes. My bed spread is a magenta/maroon color...but it still has a hint of pink in it. But I don't know what color I should paint my walls and ceiling to contrast with it. I don't want boring colors, I want funky colors. Like yellow, orange, and other bright colors like that. But they have to contrast with my bed spread! But I don't know what?!!! Help please! Thank you! ~Katie

Light Green. I had that color combo for years. I have just changed to gold, black, and leopard. (01/03/2002)

RE: How to decorate my room?

A golden orange and lime green are my daughter's recommendations. She's into bright funky colors.

RE: How to decorate my room?

I don't know if Katie wants the colors to coordinate, to contrast, or to clash. She says contrast, and the ones she mentions certainly do that. Some of them would almost certainly also clash. But if she means she wants something that will contrast but not clash, it is a little more of a challenge.

Some good colors to go with magenta are not the same as good colors for maroon. Magenta is a hot color that goes well with orange-red, turquoise, kelly, goldenrod, eggshell, and the other colors of a Mexican color palette. Maroon is a reddish-purple with a brownish quality, rather like burgundy, but a little brighter. It looks well with colors like hunter green (or something just a bit lighter than hunter, perhaps dark pistachio, depending on how dark a maroon), royal blue, just maybe with old gold or a beige-tan.

For the hot Mexican theme including magenta, I'd recommend neutral walls, and lots of eye-popping colors on accessories. Maybe one wall could be painted a bright color, or blocks of color could be applied to the walls, and of course, the trim can certainly be brilliant colors, but the effect really requires a significant amount of neutral, like the natural stucco color that is so prevalent. If this is the color scheme, then the southwest style is very appropriate and will be available in the right colors. For the best effect, I'd want to use several versions of off-white, such as oatmeal, cream, ecru, and so on to distinguish one neutral object from another. Since the haut decorators were using colors of this sort just a season or two ago, you might find the right accessories on clearance. Wood tones would be either oak or very dark browns, almost black. For the warm and somewhat less exuberant maroon plus whatever, again some neutral is important to avoid a too busy effect. Anything from white to light tan might work as the background color. Oak is a good wood tone with this, and rattan is good. (01/05/2002)

Go to a paint store and have them show you a color wheel. Choose a color opposite the colors of your bedspread perhaps. You might want to lighten the color so it isn't overwhelming. A poster above the bed echoing the bedspread colors might lend pizazz. (09/14/2006)

RE: How to decorate my room?

Well Im 15 and just moved, and I could not stand white boring walls. I painted them all pink. It is in between the color of watermelon and hot pink. My bedspread is black and white (reversible). I put my favorite band posters on a wall since I love emo/rock music and then I put my dance pictures on the other walls (I am a ballet dancer) and it looks good. Another idea is choose a color (your fav) to paint your room and learn to make your own duvet cover so you can change the theme of your room anytime. (07/28/2007)

You should go with a star theme/Hollywood. Paint your walls hot pink and add some glittery silver stars to them. Paint your old bed and furniture gold. Add some sheer curtains in a lighter pink than the walls. Also add a star beaded curtain and hang it on the window or on your wall. (01/02/2008)

Here's how you should do your room:

Here is how you should do your room: If you like outdoors and are looking for some color to paint you room try this: paint the lower parts of your room a bright green the pait the higher part of you walls and your ceiling plain blue. Then you take a paint roller dip it it in white and dab white spots all over your ceiling for clouds. If you walls look to boring put a stripe of wallpaper around the room right above the green. My friend did this with her room and it looks really cool.

If your a funky girl who is need of some bright colors try this: paint you walls orange and hot pink. Then take paint markers and stencil in you name, flowers, or maybe even the year. (You should be able to get the stencils and paint markers at your local craft store.) If your walls still look bare you can take all your family, friends, and your pets pictures and put them on your wall. They will no only make your walls less bare but they'll brighten up your room and make you smile every time. Hope I could help. (01/26/2008)

20 ways to organize and restyle your room:

Bored of you room? Want to give it a new look? Well here are some ways to brighten up your room and organize it without total change:
  1. Decorate your room in fun pictures or posters. (not too many, you don't want your room to look cluttered)
  2. Take your multicolored hair bands and stretch them around a jar then us the jar to hold pencils.
  3. Put a few of your favorite stuffed animals on your bed (perhaps ones that match with your bedspread) tie colorful patterned ribbons around their necks.
  4. Make a funky bulletin board by gluing pom-poms to a plain cork board.
  5. Take a plain picture frame and and decorate the inside of the frame with plastic jewels and other decoratives to make your photos a litter brighter.
  6. Line the inside of your dresser drawers with wrapping paper.
  7. Take a regular ice cube tray and fill it with your little extras such as hair pieces, tacks, paper clips, rubber bands, etc.
  8. Hang streamers from you window.
  9. Put Christmas lights around a potted plant.
  10. Use foam and stencil out the first letter of your name decorate it with fake gems, pop out stickers, etc. Then hand it on your wall.
  11. Replace your light bulb with a colored one.
  12. Burn a scented candle to give your room a warm homey affect.
  13. Make a collage of all your favorite colors and hang it on your wall.
  14. Use an old cereal box to cut of the top at an angle. Cover the outside in wrapping paper and use it to store your magazines.
  15. Using 3 match boxes cover them in different wrapping papers, glue a fake jewel to each end and for the finishing touch tie a ribbon/piece of yarn around the three boxes. Now you have a small set of drawers to hold your stickers and other small items in.
  16. Use a shower caddy to store you CDs in.
  17. Take a cookie sheet and cover the inside with wrapping paper. Decorate the outside with rhinestones. Now you have a magnetic board to put memos on.
  18. Take a 1 in. by 1 in. sticker, stick it to a piece of paper and cut the paper into a circle. Then take a clear stones that you would use in a fish tank. (for smaller stickers use smaller stones) Glue the stone on top of the paper and glue a magnet on the bottom of the paper. When it dries you'll have a cool magnet. (You can buy the magnets and possibly the stones and your craft store, but if you can't find the stones there look where they would sell fish tank items. They probably wouldn't have them at a pet store.)
  19. Take empty candy tins and decorate the tops of them with scrap booking paper. Label each one so you know what's inside. Glue strong magnets to the back of the tins. Then take a metal ruler and attach the tins on and hang the ruler on the wall. Then whenever you need something you can just pull he tin off.
  20. Use a suction cup soap holder to stick to your mirror and hold all your hair accessories such as clips, hair scrunchies, and perhaps even your hairbrush.

RE: I KNOW HOW TO DECORATE!

Decorating is easy. Here are some steps that I made up to help everyone.
  1. Go online or to a store and buy bedding that you think is totally you.
  2. Find a color in the bedding that is not used much (not a "main" color) and use that same color for your walls, maybe tone it down a bit so it is not too bright.
  3. Keep your other furniture simple and "in the color scheme" (keep in mind that white furniture will go with pretty much any colors you choose for everything else.)
  4. Keep it simple so you can decorate your walls later with things that match your personality.
  5. Before you go through with everything, draw a picture with color to make sure you are really going to like it.
  6. Have fun.

Some good color schemes ( you can add white):

  1. blue, green, purple
  2. pink and purple
  3. pink and orange
  4. black and pink
  5. green and yellow
  6. red and black
  7. pink and brown
  8. blue and brown

Keep in mind that it is good to stick with a color scheme, but you can add cool pops of color like a shiny silver lamp or some bright colored pillows. Try and stay away from white walls. (03/13/2008)

RE: How to decorate my room?

You can do something with bold colors like deep purple's. You can match it with brown pillows to give a loungy feel. I put a mantle I got from Habitat for Humanity in my room. It gave it a sophisticated and cool feel. (04/25/2008)

redecorating

If you're looking for cheap, easy ways to redecorate your room, try cutting out fashion ads/photo shoot pages from magazines and sticking them on a wall or door, all aligned with no gaps.

It looks amazing. I have it on my door and the corner of 2 of the walls above my bed. I also find awesome things at $2 shops such as pirate flags and fake flowers and just stick them anywhere they'll fit. My room is all brown, but I managed to make it super colorful and it still looks good. (12/01/2008)

RE: How to decorate my room?

I personally love pink and black. Since my parents won't let me paint my walls black I'm doing a neon pink with black paint for quotes on my wall. Like a quote I put up from Gerard Way was something like "no matter what anybody says to you, no matter what anybody does to you, you stay who you are" -Gerard Way (12/22/2008)
