Where can I find a source for free furniture, carpet, ie. beds, a washing machine, fridge, freezer, wardrobe, sofa or chair, etc. Thank you.
Try your local Salvation Army Thrift Store. They are usually good at giving out vouchers for free furniture at the thrift store office, then you take it to the thrift store itself. Usually you don't get to pick what you want and it is only necessities. I have never heard of them giving carpeting or appliances. Most people just don't need carpeting, and don't need a complete household full of equipment at one time. Maybe you should look for a furnished apartment. Ask your church for some help, sometimes they will give a certain amount of help. If you have a closet you don't need a wardrobe, a dresser or chest of drawers would work. The free stuff you get has usually been pretty well used. If you get a fridge, there is a freezer in that, it might not be a large one, but will work. You can always go to a laundromat instead of having a washer. Usually the Salvation Army is good for beds, and sofas and/or chairs, it just depends on what they have on hand. You would know more of what is available in your area than we do.
You might try Freecycle - http://www.freecycle.org/. I don't know too much about it, but i know people list stuff that they want to give away for free. Also, check curbs after yard sales (1 or 2 in the afternoon.) A lot of people put stuff on the curb with FREE signs on them rather than bothering to cart them back into the house. Call local churches - they would know of any charities that give away free furniture to people in need. Good luck!
