Placement will really depend on the furniture you have.
A good way to figure it out is to measure everything and make small paper cut-outs that are to scale. You could say that 1' = 1/2" so you would start with a piece of paper that is 11" x 5 1/2" to represent the room. Measure your furniture and cut out squares/rectangles to represent each piece, then move them around the paper.
FYI you can buy pads of paper in most stores that have a 1/4" grid pattern on them rather than the standard lines. This kind of paper works really well for this.
