When we were little, my mom would make sloppy joes by browning ground beef and onions. Drain off grease and add 2 cans vegetable soups and heat thoroughly. She would serve on hamburger buns or regular bread.

  • 1 1/2 lb ground beef fry - drain
  • 1/2 cup sweet relish
  • 3/4 cup catsup.
Mix all together. Simmer for half hour or so. Serve on toasted buns with some cheddar cheese. Delicious! (04/02/2008)

RE: Quick Sloppy Joes

Vegetable soup? I'm not sure if I would like that or not. Tomato soup would be more in the vein of traditional sloppy joes, but a lot of times what "Mommy made" when you were little is the only "real" thing for you -- I feel that way about a lot of things! (04/02/2008)

Recipe: 4-3-2-1 Sloppy Joes

Archived on 07/09/2009

This was my mother's old stand-by recipe for Sloppy Joes. The recipe is probably well over 50 years old.

Ingredients

  • 4 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 Tbsp. sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. vinegar
  • 1 cup ketchup

Directions

Brown about 1 1/2 pounds ground beef* Drain well. Add all sauce ingredients. (You may add a little water to sauce - it will cook off while simmering). Simmer until sauce is thick.

*My mother would add a chopped onion to the ground beef while cooking - we prefer not to have the onion. If you like onion then add a chopped onion while browning the ground beef

Recipe: Easy Sloppy Joes

This Sloppy Joe mix I made when my kids were little and I made it a lot! It makes a lot and is great for family get togethers or large families.

The nice thing is that it is really simple quick and easy on the stomach! It is a more down home type recipe and you will be surprised at how well it tastes!

Ingredients

  • 2 cans tomato soup (reg size cans)
  • 2 cans Chicken Gumbo Soup (reg size cans also)
  • 6 tsp. vinegar
  • 3 Tbsp. cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup regular mustard
  • 2 lb. hamburger

Directions

Brown your hamburger, draining off any grease. Then add your ingredients and mix together. You can add pepper, salt and onion, depending on your tastes.

All you have to do now is serve. Hope you enjoy it. Good Luck

RE: Easy Sloppy Joes

That is very close to the sloppy joe recipe I grew up on. The only difference is we used Ketchup instead of tomato soup and vinegar.

I might have to give your way a try. It was almost like the family secret recipe. If we had friends over my mom always used the manwich to make sloppy joes. Since growing up I have run across several sloppy joe recipes using chicken gumbo and I have to agree it is very tasty. (03/27/2008)

CAN YOU MAKE THIS WITHOUT GUMBO? (01/23/2007)

RE: Super Sloppy Joes

I have been making this exact recipe for years. It's one of our favorites! It really does need the chicken gumbo soup (Campbells makes it) as far as I'm concerned. It would be just a regular sloppy joe if you left it out and substituted something else. You might think the ingredients sound sort of wired but it's really quite tasty! My hubby likes some hamburger dills on his sandwiches. (01/23/2007)

By Debbie52

RE: Super Sloppy Joes

Hi! What size gumbo do you need? A small can like chicken noodle soup or the larger cans like the Chunky soup can? Also when you say prepared mustard is that like regular yellow mustard? Sorry to sound so clueless :( Thanks (01/23/2007)

By Andjerm

RE: Super Sloppy Joes

Andjerm: Yes, prepared mustard is the same as yellow mustard, like what you'd put on a hotdog. The size for the Chicken Gumbo soup is 10 3/4 oz. It's a regular size can of soup.

Oh and NO you are not clueless. Asking for specifics when you're not sure is a good idea! I like to know exactly what I'm doing before I try a recipe for the first time. (02/04/2007)

RE: Sloppy Joes

I used to buy ground beef in that amount. When my family was still home. Here are a couple of suggestions.

Brown some meat with onion(regular or dried minced), garlic(minced or powder), oregano and pepper. Then portion it out into plastic fold over sandwich bags and place 4 or 5 into a gallon zip loc bag and freeze. Thereby having a base ready for chili, spaghetti or casseroles.

Next I would make up meatloaves of whatever size I wanted then bag and freeze raw to cook when defrosted.

I'm sure you can think of lots more to do with all your lovely meat such as the tasty recipe you posted. When I was working, I did a lot of weekend prep that went into the freezer. (10/25/2004)

RE: Sloppy Joes

I also have a great sloppy joe recipe. Brown and drain 2 pounds of ground beef, add one jar of Heinz chilli sauce and one can of tomato soup (campbells). heat until hot. Serve with choice of toppings on buns. Enjoy (10/25/2004)

RE: Sloppy Joes

I have one if you want to eat really really cheap or are a vegetarian or single.

Buy TVP texturized vegetable protein, not in chunks, it also comes in granules in the bulk section of the health food store. It is cheap, doesn't go bad, and very nutritious.

Since the main flavor in Sloppy Joes or tacos is the sauce in seasoning--this stuff works great.

I take some out of the jar, usually a cup for a small can of sloppy joe sauce and cook it on the stove with about a half cup of water added. You cook it until it swells and softens and looks like ground beef.

You can kinda taste the difference, I put chopped green peppers in mine to liven it up. But it is low fat and good for you.

I do the same thing when making tacos and substitue it for the ground beef. I like this one better.

This stuff got me through college when I was tired of ramen....I had roomates and limited freezer space. (10/27/2004)

Charlotte's Sloppy Joes

Ingredients

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 2 Tbsp. mustard
  • 1/2 - 1 Tbsp. sugar (I use generic splenda)
  • 1 tsp. garlic salt or garlic powder (more or less to taste)
Directions

Cook and drain ground beef (I use regular ground beef, drain and rinse very well, this will make it as lean as the 93% lean beef), stir in ketchup, sugar (or splenda), mustard, and garlic salt/powder. Simmer on low for 10 - 15 minutes.

This can be made ahead and froze. It can also be kept warm on low in a crockpot.

Source: This is my mother in law Charlotte's recipe. I NEVER buy store bought sauce anymore. This is easy and tasty! (08/07/2008)

RE: Recipes For Sloppy Joe

I am a big proponent of easy cooking. So, I love Womans' Day"3 ingredient meals". The one I love the most is this one for Sloppy Joes, but I love it most for goulash.
  • 2 lbs ground beef (I use turkey burger)
  • 1 26 oz. can of spaghetti sauce
  • 1 16 oz. can cranberry jelled juice or berries
That's it. Just brown and drain the meat, add the other ingredients and simmer for about 20 minutes. I never liked sloppy joes because it was too spicy. This is just enough sweet to be really good. You may want to try it at home to make sure you like it before serving it to others. It's a hit with me and mine, and like I said, I add mac and make it even more interesting. If you plan to add mac, however, and you don't want to eat it all now, I would freeze the sauce and make just enough mac to cover the sauce you save out. Some pasta's freeze great but others don't. Enjoy! (08/08/2008)

RE: Recipes For Sloppy Joe

A very easy quick tasty recipe is Sloppy Joes
  • Hamburger
  • Catsup
  • squirt of mustard - optional
Brown and drain meat. Add catsup until moist. Simmer a while.

That is it! It was always my kids favorite. When I would make another one, they were quick to tell me it didn't taste right. Who was I to argue with success?

You can always use BBQ sauce to replace the catsup for another very good taste. (08/08/2008)

This is how we do it:

Cook together the Hamburger and Onion until done. Add a about a half cup or so of cracker crumbs to absorb the grease. Add a small can of tomato sauce and small amount of Liquid Smoke and serve. (08/08/2008)

RE: Recipes For Sloppy Joe

Let's make it easy!

Brown 1 lb. hamburger and 1 finely chopped onion, tilt pan and take out extra grease with a turkey baster. Then add 1/3 cup bbq sauce, 2/3 cup catsup (I use whatever is on sale) and 1 or 2 tsp. of brown sugar, to your taste.

Turn way down low and let simmer at least a 1/2 hour, stirring every 10 min. Thats it! We like ours thick not soupy (add a little v8 or shake up the last of catsup bottle with water to thin if necessary.)

I have also been known to sneakily grate in zucchini or carrot for extra veggie boost.

I usually double or triple the recipe then freeze. (08/08/2008)

RE: Recipes For Sloppy Joe

We have 4 granddaughters living with us so our recipe is really easy to accommodate the various tastebuds. To 1 1/2 lb browned and drained ground beef, I add 8 oz can tomato sauce, 1 tsp onion powder or less, dash of salt and pepper and a little water. Let it simmer to incorporate the seasonings and evaporate the water and then serve. The girls like to add a slice of cheese to their sandwiches to keep the meat juices from soaking through the buns. RE: Recipes For Sloppy Joe

I cook for about 100 people on our monthly church sings. We serve food after the singing is over ,and they have always said it was good. I use 6 pounds of hamburger, any kind, also deer burger. I brown it with an onion, then after its done, I add 2 pkgs. of mild taco seasoning, stir, then add 4 cans of cheap tomato soup just as is. Don't add water.

After it cooks enough to thicken just add ketchup to taste and a little bit of brown sugar to taste. Then simmer till you like the taste, also if still too thick, you can add water. All that's left over, freeze into containers that can be used to reheat in microwave. It lasts for quite awhile. (08/30/2008)
