Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease an 8x8 inch baking pan. In a medium pan, melt the butter and remove it from the heat. Stir in the sugar and cocoa. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. Combine the flour, baking powder and saltines together and stir into the chocolate mixture. Fold in the walnuts (if desired). Pour the batter into the pan. Bake for 25 minutes or until a wooden pick, inserted in the center, comes out clean. Cool in the pan or on a wire rack.
