This will season 1 to 1-1/2 pounds of ground meat. I like things really spicy so you may want to half the recipe if you don't.

Ingredients

  • 1 to 1 1/2 lb. ground meat
  • 2 Tbsp. chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 2 Tbsp. dehydrated onion flakes
  • 1/4 tsp. cumin
  • 1 tsp. paprika
  • 1 can of diced green chilies
  • salt to taste
  • 1/2 a cup of water

Directions

Brown your ground meat (we use venison for our tacos). Add dry spices, green chiles and a half a cup of water. Stir and simmer until as dry as you like your taco meat.

I keep a jar of homemade "Chili" seasoning mix in my pantry. Here's recipe:
1/4 cup ground red chili pepper or cayenne
1/4 cup paprika
2 Tbsp.dried minced onion
4 tsp.ground cumin
2 tsp. dried oregano
2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. crushed dried red pepper

Combine all ingredients. Makes 3/4 Cup

Add 3 Tbsp. to each pound of meat when making chili. Replace commercial chili powder in favorite recipes. Use to season meat for tacos or taco salad. Add to ground beef for grilled burgers or a meat loaf.

If your pallet is tender just use less. It's spicy!

Recipe: Homemade Taco Seasoning

Instead of paying to get a packet of taco seasoning, make your own. It will save you at least a dollar or so over the price of name brand. Here's the recipe:

Ingredients

  • 2 tsp. chili powder
  • 1 tsp. paprika
  • 1 1/2 tsp. cumin
  • 2 tsp. parsley flakes
  • 1 tsp. onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic salt or garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp. oregano

Directions

Put all ingredients in small container with lid and shake until combined. Add to 1 pound of browned ground beef. Add 3/4 cup water and bring to a simmer. Let meat cook down until juice is mostly cooked up in meat. Serve with whatever recipe taco meat is called for.

I don't know how much it would cost in ingredients to make your own taco seasoning. I suppose if you make tacos a lot then making yourself could be worth it; however I really like the McCormick taco seasoning packet and I can get on sale. I'd just as soon buy that then spend my time making it. I was very interested in the Taco Bell seasoning recipe tho as I love the way their taco meat tastes!
