My daughter and I have both use fabric panels dipped in liquid starch and smoothed on the walls. Much like you would wall paper. But when you get tired of that color, or it gets dirty, just pull it off and wash it.

To the lady who is renting and can't touch the paneling. If you have any color of brown in the walls, you can't go wrong with blues. They compliment each other, and different shades can compliment any shade of brown. Just look at about any fabric center, and you will find blues and browns. You can accessorize with blue things like curtains, pots and pans, speckled ware, etc. Here's the top of my fridge against very dark cabinets. Hope this helps!

What color should I paint my kitchen? My units are ivory with a very dark counter top. The floor is timber in a light color.

RE: Kitchen Paint Color Advice
Exactly WHAT color of "dark counter tops" do you have? If it's brown or black & with the wood floors you can go with pretty much ANY color you like.If it were me I'd not go very dark or very light in the color's shade, but instead I'd go somewhere in the middle range. Also, some of the best colors that go with wood are Blues, Tans & Golden Tans & Golden Beiges. I'm mentioning the more "warm" colors because Ireland is a lot (in weather) like Seattle where I live. (LOTS of rain) which can be depressing, especially if you use gray-based colors or taupes. Also, don't use anything to bright (like Orange or tomato red) because these colors can make you a bit crazy. (unless it's only on just one accent wall).
It's pretty hard to give you an exact color without knowing the color of your counter top. But stay in the midrange (not very light & not very dark) & if try to use something with a hint of golden in the color, like mustard or golden-tan, or golden sage green (not silver or gray sage). This will help with your mood because of the little amount of sun you guys get. But IF you did live in a super-hot climate, then I'd suggest you stay in the more mellow gray-based colors like grayish-beige or silver-sage because these colors tend to be cool & "cool you off".
As I said, because you have ivory walls & wooden floors they will match any color you choose. So IF your countertops ARE a neutral color you can go with practically ANY color you'd like & it will match. But I like to stay in the neutral range because it always looks classy then I add little touches of colors here & there. Also, if you do use a neutral color you can always change your accent pieces to another color without repainting.
* Here's an example of my color choices. I moved in here & wanted to go with a golden-beige, but the place came with blue wall to wall carpeting, so I did use the golden beige color, but tied everything together with a rug that has a golden beige background & also has a bit of blue, olive & sage in it. So now these rug colors are MY colors. And this rug makes all the difference!
If you do not want to go with a neutral color then before you choose your colors go out & buy a small kitchen rug or a great picture or look at your furniture or accessories, etc. THEN mix your colors to match one of your favorite belongings. It's easier to FIRST furnish the place THEN afterwards decide on color than the other way around! Years ago I found 3 wonderful old botanical pictures. I loved them so much I had them framed & decorated the whole room around them. Find something you love & choose your colors around that one piece!
Any questions? Send me a note here on ThriftyFun.

I want to paint my kitchen red. I have a green floor and hunter green countertops. My cabinets are a light cream color. I am concerned my kitchen may look like Christmas. Any advice?

Andrea, if your heart is set on red, I'd do it, but I'd be careful what shade of red because of the looking like Christmas thing. If you lean more toward a brick red than a real true red it might be better, but you're the one who has to live with it & love it. One of my friends did her kitchen in red, like a barn red, it turned out very nice, looks really good. (08/06/2008)

If you want to avoid a "Christmas" look you may have to darken the cream colored cabinets. (08/06/2008)

RE: Kitchen Paint Color Advice
Two things that I have learned from experience:
1. The color that you pick from the paint chips never looks the way that you want it to once it's on the wall. It's very difficult to judge how a color will look on the wall from a tiny chip. Test-paint a small area ( 1 or 2 sq. ft. ) to get a better idea of how it will look finished. Then you won't have to live with the wrong color until you can get the gumption up to re-paint it. Too, if you don't like the color that it turns out, then you can always re-paint. It's not like you will have to live with the wrong color forevermore. LOL
2. Go with the color that makes you happy. You are the one that has to look at it, you are the one that needs to be happy with what you've chosen. I wanted to paint a lot of my house blue, because I absolutely LOVE blue; but I got a lot of flack from lots of people. I simply told them that it was my house, and I had to look at it everyday, and it was my choice, ( but thanks for your input). So, most of the house was painted blue, and I have been happy with it.
And, for what it's worth, I painted my son's room ocean blue, sort of a dark blue-green, very pretty, but he only had 2 small windows in his room, and the room was small, and it really was too dark a color for all the other things going on in there. (Should have used a lighter shade). Happy painting! (08/06/2008)

RE: Kitchen Paint Color Advice
If you choose any dark shade of paint, such as red, make sure you apply an appropriate like color primer otherwise the red will have a transparent look and you will have to apply many layers. With the right primer, you will likely only have to apply two coats of paint maximum. (08/07/2008)

I painted my kitchen a deep red (towards a burgundy shade) - I also have hunter green countertops and white cupboards. I love it. It is very rich looking - I get lots of compliments. Go for it! (08/08/2008)

I think it will look too much like Christmas as you feared. Also, it sounds way too dark for a kitchen. I personally like my kitchen to be bright and cheery! I vote no. (08/08/2008)

I need help picking a color to paint my kitchen. The cabinets are bleached oak, with black granite counter top. The floor is an off white marble. Any suggestions?

RE: Kitchen Paint Color Advice
To the lady with the bleached oak cabinets, and the black granite counter top, with the off white floor. If you are the traditional type, I would go with a light teal colored wall.
I also think a light peach would blend well. Change your lighting and the whole room will look different when you paint.
Also, have you thought of a theme to go with your color? I have a love for the Italian theme, and that goes well with the earth tones, and red. Look at theme for your pictures and things you will be using, then decide on a color. (07/30/2008)

Almost any pastel color would look lovely but leave the ceiling white :-) Hint: What is your favorite color and what is your color scheme in adjacent rooms? ;-) (07/30/2008)

I too have bleached oak cabinets and a small amount of wall above and on top and around them. I painted my kitchen walls cobalt blue and I love it! It really accented the light oak cabinets and made a big difference. My family thought I was crazy but they love it now! (07/30/2008)

We recently remodeled our kitchen. We painted the walls above the chair rail with a color called "haystack". Always paint your ceiling a color one to two shades lighter than the wall. (07/30/2008)

RE: Kitchen Paint Color Advice
What I would do is use a dark color paint anything light will still look washed out and sterile, lol. I think you should go to a paint store and pick out a few paint chips of dark colors you like and bring them home and put them against the cabinets to see which colors you like better. If it were me, I would go with a deep rose color. (07/30/2008)

RE: Kitchen Paint Color Advice
Have you thought about changing your lighting? Many couples update their cabinets but don't consider their lighting. This style is so 70's. Gives you the light but that is about it. I know I sound awful but believe me, update that light, there are many styles out there. The bulbs this light uses are energy saving but there are others out there that will accent your new cabinets, plus add money to the bottom line when reselling. I really don't like dark colors in kitchens but that is my feelings. Everyone had their own ideas. Make sure that if this is an open space that the colors should flow. Like myself with the lighting. Take your picture to Home Depot if you have one near by. They can help you with lighting and color. Show them pictures you have found in magazines. Lowe's sell many design magazines where I live. You have beautiful cabinets. Sincerely, Judith Walker (08/01/2008)

Get LOTS of paint samples from wherever you will buy your paint and tape them to the walls. As the days go by you will begin to eliminate some you thought you would love, and see others in a whole new way. I did this and after about two weeks I knew exactly what I wanted AS WELL as what would look good in my space. (08/01/2008)

RE: Kitchen Paint Color Advice
With bleach oak counters and black granite counters, and off white marble the answer would seem simple to me. White and black are always considered elegant colors. The bleach oak cabinets blend well enough with the white marble floors. By using a medium gray for the walls you are accenting the black and blending in everything. You may wish to include some type of black hardware for the cabinet handle and hinges to add another little touch of class. Also look for picture frame you can use for wall decor to put black and white prints in. The back and white prints can have a touch ot a bright color such as red, orange, etc. This is a real contemporay style (08/02/2008)

Well your cupboard's are way to dark. You may want to paint them first. Now white seems to be the in color, as well as blue and green. I can give you all kinds of advise. I am going to tell you to go Better Home's and Garden's.com. Also you can visit places on the internet to help when it comes to colors. Lowe's and Home Depot just being a couple.
You can do so many things any more it's unreal. You can buy stencils that rub off and put them any where your little heart desires. If you are artistic there is no end to the thing's you can do. There's stenciling, different types of painting such as marbling or using sponges to make your kitchen look great with 2 or 3 color's mixed in and can be quite beautiful. Also keep in mind, they also use 3 color's instead of the 2 colors when doing any room! I have to paint my living room. I am going with beige. My kitchen will be a Gun Metal blue.
When the house was being built I did not have enough time to take off and visit Home Depot which is a great place to visit as well as Lowe's. I had so much going on at the time I had to go to the place I was told to and pick out what they needed for in the house at the time. I needed my counter top's at this particular time, since I had no idea what color I wanted in my kitchen.
I chose a counter top with a mixture of slate blue, some gray, and a wine as well as a lighter almost pink color. It sounds strange but I have quite a lot of colors for the not boring look and boy is this going to be one beautiful kitchen (I am doing a lot of praying over this). I can't wait.Do you know you can paint counter top also? Well I hope I helped even just a little if you do not paint the cupboard's then think of your favorite color but brighten it up as the kitchen needs to be a little bit brighter. (04/29/2008)

What color should I paint my kitchen/den area? The counters have sage green, rust, grey, and an olive/beige tone. Cabinets are a dark mahogany. Living area is connected to my kitchen, so very open floor plan. Sectional sofa is light beige color. I don't want a cave, but don't want it too light either. Please help!

What about a light taupe? It is a neutral color, the dark cabinets would still stand out, and it will blend with the counter tops and living room. I've seen dark wood with a light taupe and it was very classy. (04/18/2008)
