Removing Pen Marks from Photos

I have some old photos that have captions written with a felt tip pen on the back of them. They were sent to me and were not dry so the photos have pen marks on them. How can I remove the marks without ruining the photo?

What worked for me was alcohol on a tissue, not pressing very hard.
