Joey (Akita/Retriever)
Meet Joey. She will be 9 years young on March 13. We adopted her when she was 5 weeks old from the Animal Foundation through PetSmart. Her mom is an Akita and we believe, based on her personality, that her dad is some sort of retriever.

At age 7 months she began doing unusual things like opening all the doors in the house, carrying in the groceries and at night getting a pillow from the bed and bringing it into the den where I watch TV. She even began taking other dogs on walks by gently grabbing their leashes from their owner's hands and holding on to the "handle". All we ever taught her to do is: Come, Sit, Down & Wait. Everything else she's taught herself.

For fun Joey likes to play with Maggie Mae, the Scottie next door. Joey found Maggie Mae on her morning walk with my husband. We couldn't find Maggie's owners (no tag or chip) and since our neighbors had lost their pet they adopted Maggie.

Hi..we have an Akita /Chow mix..I know what you mean about her talking to us..she is smart , faithful and loving..we got her as a puppy and she became very sick with puppy strangles..She is now 2 years old and very healthy..there is something very special about Akitas..it's hard to explain, but if you have one you know..

Rescues ARE the best pets, swear to heaven they know and appreciate their "2nd chances". All we've ever had, and never had nor heard of a "bad" rescued critter. Bless you and all those who end up in need of being 'rescues', aka "lovers the second time around".

Hi, just had to comment, we have an Akita mix as well, and he's the smartest thing!! His mom was Akita, and we're guessing his dad was part black lab. We also adopted him through a rescue program, but he was 8 weeks old. We did the basic obedience with him, but we swear, he "talks" to us. He just knows what we're saying, and he comes up and looks at us, and we usually know what he wants. He will be 12 years old this year. I just had to share, because it's not often we hear of another Akita mix.
