I'm looking for a recipe to make my own chocolate cookie crumb pie crust, like the kind you can buy at the grocery store. I know I've seen a recipe in the past that called for chocolate wafer cookies, but I don't know what kind they mean. With the holidays coming up I sure could use that recipe soon. Thank you in advance.

After much searching for nabisco chocolate wafers with no success and not wanting to scrape oreos for my curst, I bought a box of oreo pie mix and in it is chocolate crumbs. If your making a piece that needs the crust up the sides you will need two boxes which will cost you around six dollars, otherwise scrape the oreos. From what I have read the oreos cookies are the best although I haven't tried the chocolate grahams.

You can use the chocolate 'Nilla Wafers or I have even used chocolate sandwich cookies (Oreo type), with the cream filling removed, but you need to make sure to crush or put these in the food processor until they are very fine as I don't think they crush as well as the wafers do. Either one is very tasty, but I think I might prefer the taste of the sandwich cookie crust.

I just did the graham cracker with cocoa powder a few days ago. The problem was I didn't do it in the food processor, and the crust looked funny. It was 2 different colors. As the cocoa didn't mix well. I guess you have to do it in the food processor to mix thoroughly. But then my crust stick to the pie plate like cement. What did I do wrong?

The recipe is simple. You need to buy (Nabisco)Nilla Wafers...they are with the other cookies at the grocers(round, flat cookies). They have the regular nilla's, as well as rainbow and chocolate. (It sounds like you want chocolate). Then you just add melted butter until you can press it, and it semi-sticks-together: 3Tb usually will do it. You can use this method with graham crackers(they have chocolate too)and any other cookies you can crumble in your processor. Good luck to you! I have found it is cheaper to buy the premade with coupons...and you get a free pie pan to reuse!and the plastic cover flips upside down for transport. Happy Holidays!

Tip: Chocolate Cookie Crumb Pie Crust

Archived on 11/28/2008

I love making icebox-type dessert pies for the summer season. So many of the recipes sounded great, but called for a chocolate cookie crumb crust. I'm not about to buy a pre-made chocolate crust, nor do I ever have chocolate cookies on hand cause they are too darned expensive to buy, and I didn't want to have to make chocolate cookies just for a crust.

SO, one day I was making a pie flavor that just screamed out for a chocolate crumb crust and I was going to use my plain old cheapo standby graham cracker crust recipe, but then I got a bright idea of adding some cocoa powder to the processor while making the crumbs. It worked great, 1/4 cup.

It was one of those inspired moments that you have no idea where they come from. I've made several of the crusts since then with the plain old cheapo graham crackers and cocoa powder and the pie flavors have definitely been enhanced by the chocolate flavored crust. I couldn't tell the difference between my fake chocolate cookie crust and one made from actual chocolate cookies.

Thanks for a terrific idea! I'd like to suggest brushing the crust with melted chocolate, too. I usually freeze the crusts first so the crumbs don't drive me crazy, but doing this is so yummy! Try it with coconut or banana cream pies - luscious! (05/16/2006)

Great idea as you can no longer buy the Oreo cookie crumbs in a box like graham crumbs. The chocolate cookie crumbs are essential to a recipe I have for Kentucky Burbon Balls. (07/16/2007)

h3>RE: A New Way to Make Chocolate Cookie Crumb Crust Thanks so much for the tip. I have a recipe that calls for chocolate wafer cookie crumbs for the crust, but was thrilled when I was able to start buying the Oreo cookie crumbs. Recently I was unable to buy the crumbs and had to revert back to the wafer cookies and making my own crumbs, which I used to do with a zip lock bag and rolling pin. I found this a real problem, as my strength just isn't what it used to be, because of medical problems! Thank you, thank you! (08/23/2007)

I will definitely try this. I was using chocolate animal crackers in the food processor but this sounds a lot easier. I assume you can add the cocoa to the boxed graham cracker crumbs. Thanks (08/18/2008)
