When using charcoal to get bait smell out of your freezer, do you leave it running on turned off?

I use vinegar/little water. Never heard of charcoal. I turn mine off only to save a few cents on the electric bill. Completely empty it and wipe clean. Need to use a brush to get into the lines between the vertical and horizontal.
Swish, done. Wrap the bait up not only in the zip bags but also use tinfoil to cover the bag.
Smelling good to me. LOL.
