Looking for cheaper public transportation options? I don't have a car and am a non driver, so I depend a lot on public transport. Up till the end of February this year, I had part-time paid work, which included a monthly travel card for the public transport system. Now I no longer have the job or the monthly card!
A 2 hour concession ticket costs me $1.90, so I found that fares were really eating into my pension payment, seeing I need to use PT for getting to the shops, library, etc. Then by asking, I found that I can get a 10 trip ticket for under $14. This can be used every day for 10 days, or as many times in one day as you need to use it. The cost of the 10 trip ticket works out to $1.30 a ticket, compared to $1.90 for a single ticket, a saving of 60 cents on each ticket!
As I live in Australia, I know conditions and fare prices will be different in other countries, but wherever you live, if you need to use public transport regularly, ask around for a better deal!
Sometimes there will be people at the bus stations looking to sell passes at a much discounted rate, I say only do this if you are daring, I wouldnt want to see something bad happen. Sometimes people need the extra money and sell their passes, be sure this is legal in your area first.

My brother lives in Blue Island Illinois, a southern suburb of Chicago. It the paper, the Chicago Tribune, I believe, there is usually a 10 ride pass in there on Sundays. Also, if you ask a senior centers or the V.A. they might have passes. I know the V.A. here has a service that will bring you to your appointments. No matter where you are. My dad used to go about 15 miles to the V.A. in Chicago. Peace.
Many larger cities in the US and seemingly the UK have "wheels to work" or "wheels for work" programs allowing eligible families to get a free car. It may be worth looking into.
Many cities in the US also offer discount rates on Public Transpertaion for Veterans, Students, and Seniors. As well as group rates, weekly, monthly, and multi-trip rates.
Another point of interest is many cities offer free cab fare for drunks, or at least discounted rates. If it's bar time and you need a ride ask the barkeep.
Call whatever department runs transportation in your city for more details on discounts and special offers. Q
I couldn't agree more Elliecat. Its all about beating the system. Plan ahead; search the internet; interrogate booking offices, information stands and company offices for the best and cheapest deals; get the facts and figures, on paper if you can.
I know! There is no more a confusing confusion of cheap travel systems as there is here in the UK. Thankfully the government is trying to introduce some sort of order.
