Both names are used for the same breed of dog. The German Shepherd became the Alsatian after WW I and II made anything German unpopular. They were orinally called Alsatian Wolf Dogs, then just Alsatian after Alsace-Lorraine. In 1977 The AKC changed the name officially back to German Shepherd.
