We just had success by first cleaning the area with the green side of a scotchbrite sponge with water and ivory dish soap. Most of the marker came off. Then based on another answer we used a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and it all came off right away. We may have been able to just use that.
There didnt appear to be any damage to the painting.
Now to hide the sharpies from the two-year-old!
