Cleaning Fluid Leaked from Steam Cleaner In to Carpet

I cleaned a rug with my Hoover steam cleaner, and I realized after that the small opening where the used cleaning fluid goes in the collection tank had been clogged and all the cleaning fluid is all over the carpet. It is dry, but the smell stays on. How do I get rid of the toxic smell as it is causing me problems.
Thank you.
