Some farm and feed stores carry it. It does burn differently and can leave a black residue

I don't know where you can buy coal. I do know this. Unless there has been a change over the years, you should not burn coal in a wood stove. The grate in a wood stove is not made to withstand the higher temperatures caused by the burning of coal. In times past, more than a few grates in wood stoves were melted by people making this mistake.
