Buying Cold Hardy Bamboo?

I have a few acres in Kansas City and I would like to plant bamboo as a screen and hope to find a large amount and possibly a few varieties that are cold hardy.

I live in the tropics and bamboo grows very fast and has a very deep and strong root system. More people I know are wanting it removed than wanting to plant it. However, growing bamboo can be beneficial and can earn you a profit if you want to thin it out, you can easily sell it.

i do not believe there is any such thing as "inexpensive" bamboo unless you find someone who wishes to have some dig up that they have planted so putting in a bamboo screen will be costly.

  • You should first check with your County Extension Office for recommendations on what kind to buy for your area and also whether you should be looking at clumping or non-clumping types.
  • You can find how to contact your local office on this site:
  • You might try placing an ad on your local Craigslist to see if anyone in your area is selling or wanting to sell bamboo.
  • Check on Freecycle as you might get lucky and find someone who hates their bamboo or has too much (but be prepared to work hard for your prize).
  • Bamboo is sold at most large nurseries and in small quantities at large garden stores.
  • But it is best to ask questions from your county agent before making that purchase.

I would reconsider. It is very invasive. I live in NY and people are paying big bucks to get it removed. Its roots go very deep.
