Cause of Dog's Death?

My dog died yesterday morning 18 November 18, 2019. Her name was Jojo. She was 9 years and 5 months old. Jojo was rescued from the street as a 1 week old puppy. Her colour was pure black with white on her chest (the white coloured area was medium sized). We did not know breed. My dog is didn't go outside of the compound. She was a virgin bitch. My dog's problem was that she produced milk from her breasts without being pregnant. She would drink her own milk.

Her left leg had one 4cm cyst visible. On 14 November 2019 she started to vomit continuously. She stopped barking and eating. She was tired, but could walk. At that time when she urinated there was one drop of blood. I could not tell clearly if the blood was came from her vaginal, bladder, or anal area. That was her last urine.

The next day the veterinarian gave her 3 injections and two tonics. The vomiting stopped, but she wasn't eating. One more thing, her temperature was low. The doctor told me that my dog got a viral fever. On the second day she was given 3 more injections and a pain tablet also. She was not eating when forced feeding. On the third day the doctor told me she had a serious uterus infection.

It was now an emergency because the doctor didn't check up properly on the first and second day. The third day was Sunday so the x-ray center was closed. We planned an x-ray for the next day. On the third day the doctor gave 3 injections, one for passing urine (because my dog did pass urine 2 days). Another injection was for increasing her appetite. And the final one was an energy injection. The next day, Monday, my dog passed pure black stool. She stopped walking completely.

On Monday morning at 8.30am my dog died. Her tongue was out. Below her abdominal area had been swollen for the last 3 days. I'm told that matter to the doctor, but he said viral fever. My dog started vomiting on 14 November and died 18 November in the morning at 8.30. Here there is no emergency doctors for pets. I'm from India. Please tell me what was the reason my dog died. I had two dogs; one has died and another one is fine. It is a 6 year old female dog. Please tell me reason.

A spayed dog who never had a pregnancy can in fact have symptoms that of and other symptoms related to it. It's called false pregnancy.

Viral infections are serious and requires seeing a vet asap. The many symptoms could have been from multiple things happening all at once such as internal parasites as well as a urinary track infection too (blood/diarrhea).

Consider the dog's age factor and health condition prior and how quickly this illness overcame her. It sounds like your dog's vet was trying hard to cure her and it became too much for her to pull through.

It's always sad to lose a pet you loved and I hope you can bring yourself through the grieving process because somewhere out there is another animal in need of a family. You were kind to take the puppy into your life and provide a good home. You helped save a puppy prolonging a good life for almost 9.6 years. God bless you!

Sorry for the loss of your pet. You may never know the exact reason for the death unless you get an autopsy done. Even then, the results could be inconclusive. Take comfort in knowing you gave the dog a good life.

It is so sad to lose an animal that you have loved and taken care of for so long. I know the feeling. It sounds like the dog had some sort of internal infection in their stomach or it could have been cancer. The reason I say cancer is because of the lump on the back of her leg. My dog had several of these and finally, they developed in her throat where she could no longer eat or drink. From what you are saying it does sound like the dog was very sick and the vet was doing all they knew how to do to make the dog well again.

There are some illinesses that are hard to cure and they do what they can. I know I could have gone with expensive cancer treatments for the dog but is this really fair? Just know that you loved your dog very much and the dog knows this. You are a good person and tried all you could to save the life of the animal that you loved so much. I am so sorry for your loss.

You have my deepest condolences on your loss. May your JoJo's memory always be a blessing.

It sounds like you did everything possible. I would tend to take what the vet tells you as what happened. It is so sad, but sometimes dogs get ill and pass. This is just like with people--they get viruses or have other issues and there is nothing to be done.

You did the best you could so take comfort and getting your baby care.

Prayers that you can find comfort in her memory and be easy on yourself. You gave JoJo a wonderful life taking her off the street. That is so wonderful.

Take care!!

I am so sorry about JoJo. You sound like a very responsible and loving owner who did everything possible to save your pet. The symptoms you describe sound like pyometra. Pyometra is a bacterial infection of the uterus. The symptoms you describe fit it well. It is often fatal because the infection is in the uterus and is difficult to reach because it is contained within the uterus.

Because the infection is contained it may not be noticed until the infection is too far advanced to treat with antibiotic injections. It almost always requires a spay to save the dogs life. Sadly it is fairly common.
