If there's not a clear "zigzag-to-straight" switch on your machine, there should be an adjustable WIDTH mechanism to make the zigzags more narrow. Experiment on scraps, also adjusting the stitch LENGTH as well until you achieve the desired straight stitch. (Also ensure that the needle is in the CENTER position above the foot.)

How to go from zigzag to straight stitch depends on your machine. If it's computerized, it should be a matter of selecting from the stitch display. If not computerized, it will be a matter of a dial or lever, or maybe just adjusting stitch width and/or length for the desired stitch.

If you have an owner's manual, follow those directions. If you don't have the manual, you can Google your brand and model number for a free manual download. Good luck and happy sewing.

On my machine, there is a lever that moves from the center for a straight stitich to the right for a zigzag. You also can adjust the width of the zigzag.

Most sewing machines carry zig zag stitch option.
Raise the needle by turning the handwheel toward you (counterclockwise).
Turn the pattern selection lever or dial to select the zig zag stitch.

If necessary, adjust the stitch width and stitch length for best result of sewing.

The zig zag stitch is a strong stitch, but if the tension is too tight the stitch will pucker and snap. Always check your sewing machine tension before trying the stitch on new fabrics.
Most of the time you can use the all-purpose presser foot for sewing zig zag. Some machines have a zig zag or satin stitch foot which has a slight groove underneath and a wider hole.

Write what model you have and we will tell you exactly, but usually the sewing machine has a pattern selection lever or dial.
Unlike the straight stitch, the zigzag stitch might require some adjustments depending on your project and fabric. Theres also the opportunity to adjust the pattern based on your preferences.

Adjusting the width to a larger setting will result in an exaggerated big and wide zigzag pattern.
Adjusting the width to a smaller setting will result in a series of tall mountain-peak-style zigzags.
Adjusting the length smaller will create a smaller zigzag pattern with shorter distances between zigs and zags.
Adjusting the length longer will place the stitches further apart and pull the zigzag pattern into a more shallow pattern.
