Crocheting With One Hand?

I can embroider, knit, quilt, needlepoint, but cannot crochet. My problem is I have one hand. My left. I have a thumb on my right. I am normally left-handed. I want to learn to crochet. Does anyone have any help for me?

This is a very interesting challenge. I'm left-handed, and in the middle of a simple crochet project, so I gave it a try. You need a little tension on the yarn and stability on the already completed row. I ran a knitting needle horizontally through the row of stitches 2 rows down, and then wrapped the yarn around my right thumb. For further stability I put the completed section across my knees. I think this might work with practice. You would of course need help with the first couple of rows, but that's what friends are for. Good luck, and please let us know what works for you.

Diane, I would call the Goodwill Industries; they may know of somewhere or someone that could teach you. They have a lot of programs that help rehabilitate people and help them with job skills so, maybe, they have someone that would know how to teach crocheting.

I would also call a local senior center and see if they have any of the ladies that could teach you, most creative people love to share their knowledge!

I only have the use of my left hand also, and I crochet by putting the crochet hook in a vice which is attached to a piece of wood so I can basicly use it anywhere. Hope this helps

Buy a hand brace came to thought. Attach the crochet hook to it with duck tape or some sort of something to secure it. I am right handed and do most the work with my left and hardly move the right at all.

The hand brace you can get at any pharmacy store.

If you can learn to knit with only a thumb on one hand, be positive!!! You can certainly learn to crochet!! All the second hand is used for is to hold the yarn and guide it. You don't say how much of your hand is left, but to knit, you must have
enough left to be able to grip, right? You could let the yarn hang relatively free or wrap it once around your wrist loosely and use your grip to guide the yarn through. Hope this helps!!!!

My crocheting is more like knitting - none of the fancy stuff my gram used to do. I hold the needle in one hand and guide the yarn around with the other so if you can hold the needle in your right hand - your thumb should stabilize it - and move the yarn with your left hand you should be okay!

Best wishes - you can do it!

Sorry I don't have an anwer for you....but I would like to know more about how you knit with one hand. I am currently working with a youth with CP and she wants to learn to knit. She would only be able to knit with one hand. I'd love to know how you do it so I can help her.

Heather: It's easier if you use staright knitting needles. Cast on with the hand you have left. Put the other needle in between your knees and go. I have taught many people to knit this way. Now I use circular needles. But first you must use straight needles. Try an eight or nine size just to get started.

I taught my mom and her two friends how. I learned from SEARS. They had a school to learn to knit. I was the only one who had one hand. My left is good. My right is one thumb only. So being left handed only was a problem too. My brother bet me ten dollars I couldn't do it. Well I collected on that bet.
