Dog Aggression and New Baby?

My dog is 4 years old. He has never been aggressive. However in the last 6 months we have moved cities and I've had a new baby. I had to spend 2 months in hospital with my little guy. Now we are home and my beautiful dog is showing signs of aggression. He nipped at my 6 year old daughter (his best friend) and today when he was caught eating off the counter he growled and snapped at my husband. Any chance I have I try to spend time with him, playing or walks. I've gotten him a good toy he plays with outside. But my son has to be isolated from germs and I'm unsure about how my dog will be with him so we haven't socialized them much. I don't know what to do. Is it normal that a dog goes through aggression when a new baby is introduced?

Your dog has gone through a lot of changes in a short time. He probably isn't used to be around babies. That being said, his behavior is not acceptable. You need to make sure that the children and the dog are never alone together. You also should contact an animal behavior specialist to retrain your dog.

There are those who say if you just find a way to establish your pack dominance with the dog, he will stop trying to put the 'intruder' (IE the baby) in its place. In the dog world, there has to be one dominant leader and the rest fall along down the hierarchy, and what he is trying to do is ascertain that the dog is in a higher hierarchical state than the baby, which is something you DON't want. Also if he is feeling somehow protective he will evince those behaviors.

IF you scold him firmly but with authority and create good discipline and exercise habits, he should chill out and lose the need to defend his turf. At the earliest opportunity you have to make him subservient to the baby. If you can't find ways to make this work (Cesar Millan of Dog Whisperer has great tips about this) you probably will have to surrender your dog.

Please never let the dog and kids be alone together or even close together if supervised. I have run 2 ambulance calls in my career when a dog unexpectedly attacked a child.

It is not a pleasant experience.
