Dog Not Using Puppy Pads

I have a 14 month old Yorkie who has been potty trained to go on a training pad. Lately, only when I am not home, he will poop on the carpet. Please help!

Puppy pads and training pads are wonderful if you live in an apartment or a place that doesn't have a yard. However, they can also cause problems in some cases. You will need to rehouse train your dog. Here are a few pointers and tips to help you.

  1. First, determine what has changed and why your dog isn't using his puppy pad.
  2. Did you recently move or have a person move in or leave your home?
  3. Have you changed the location of your dog's puppy pad?
  4. Do you take your dog for a walk before leaving him alone in the home?
  5. Has there been a change in his routine, food, or has he been sick recently?
  6. Once you can determine why your dog has changed his habit of pooping on his puppy pad, then you can fix this problem.
  7. Basically, you will need to rehouse train your dog again.

  8. Start over with teaching him about his puppy pad, praise him when he uses it.
  9. If he poops in the house it might be necessary to confine him to a smaller area of your home until he stops this behavior.
  10. Before leaving for extended periods of time, take your dog for a walk. Make sure he uses the toilet and finishes pooping and peeing outside.
  11. At this age your dog should be able to hold his pee and poop for 4 hours. If he isn't doing this then there is a reason why he has decided to poop in your home.
