Egg Carton Pre-K Math

There are so many ways to utilize an egg carton when teaching math. Activities can be incorporated throughout the school year. Easter, nutrition, and farm themes are perfect for using plastic eggs, along with the cartons. Pre-k math concepts included in this post are: 1-to-1 correspondence, patterns, counting, and sorting by color and size. There are variations of every activity, as well as different concepts you could do for other grade levels.

Total Time: 5-10 minutes

Yield: 4 activities from 1 egg carton

  1. This activity allows for children to recognize, complete, and create patterns. You can place plastic eggs in the carton and ask your child what the pattern is, like 'red, blue, red, blue'.
You can also put in a few to several eggs and have your child complete the pattern. If they have trouble with either of these, have them point and say each egg out loud. This sometimes makes the next one come to them easier.
Finally, your child can make their own patterns from start to finish.

  2. Children can sort plastic eggs by size too! You can have them place larger eggs in one row and smaller in another. This also can incorporate grouping like colors.
  3. To practice recognizing and sorting different colors, shade in the bottom of each egg slot with a different color. Your child can then match the plastic eggs to the correct slots. In this photo, I have pink and blue eggs that are different shades. Children can begin to understand that one color can be very light, very dark, or anywhere in between.
  4. To practice counting, have your child roll a die. They count the dots and place that number of eggs in the carton. Once they've mastered numbers 1-6, you can add a second carton and let them roll 2 dice.
