Remove excess grease from soups and stews by putting a lettuce leaf in it. Let the lettuce leaf absorb some of the grease and then toss it. You can also put a few ice cubes in your soap and stir them around a bit. Then quickly remove them before they melt. Fat will stick to the sides of the ice cubes.

I just take a paper towel and blot the top of the liquid to sop out the excess fat. It works for me.
