Geometry Bird Project - middle school boy holding a Styrofoam bird projectMy son recently had to make a sculpture using geometric shapes for his middle school geometry class. It turned out really cute and could easily be the start for a fun crafting project.

Supplies:

Steps:

  1. Cut a 4" piece off the thin wood dowel. Use it to attach the medium foam ball to the large foam ball. Once you have made holes in the foam with the dowel, remove the dowel, apply hot glue to the holes, and reinsert the dowel.
  2. Cut two triangles out of the foam sheet for the beak. Trim off one edge of both triangles, at an angle. This will allow you to glue them together in a slightly open position.
  3. Glue the beak pieces together, then glue a small length of the thin dowel to the back of the beak and stick it into the head. Apply hot glue to the dowel hole in the head (like above) to secure it.
  4. Cut out two triangles for the wings and one for the tail. Attach them to the body with hot glue.
  5. Cut the thick wood dowel in half and push the two pieces into the underside of the body for the legs. Secure them with hot glue.

  7. Getting the bird to stand up on its own can be done a few different ways. You could use a foam block or cut a foam ball in half to make two feet. You may need to play around with adding some weight to the feet to get him to stand.
  8. NOTE: This basic bird could be dressed up in so many ways. I think it would be fun to cover it in felt feathers or something. :)
