Aside from breaking it up, or spraying with Round Up, you can make a home made vinegar solution or do what I did: pour boiling water on them. This will kill it down to the root, and then it will be easy to rake away.

Straight vinegar in a spray bottle is cheap and effective.

I agree about boiling water. I use it between some bricks in teh backyard and also in the cracks in the sidewalk and driveway. It kills the roots but doesn't poison anything. It's also good if you see a place where sugar ants are coming up.
