Getting another dog.

  • A dog can shed about 35 million particles in just an ounce of stool.
  • It only takes 1000 viral particles for a puppy to get it.

  • Make sure your pup has completed all shots before bringing him in to the enviroment.
  • There still is no guarantee your pup will not get the parvo virus.
  • You should be disinfecting your home, yard, and garage frequently.
  • The virus can last about 6 months to a year less inside about 2 months.
  • You have to kill the virus with bleach.
  • One part bleach to 30 parts water.
  • It is better to wait or get one that has all vaccinations completed.
  • You can have a titer test done to your environment to make sure it is safe for another dog.

Here are some steps to take before getting another dog after parvo:

Step 1
Disinfect the entire interior of your house, especially deep cleaning with bleach anywhere the dog may have vomited or had diarrhea.

Step 2
Spray the backyard with bleach, clean all surfaces.

Step 3
It is best to wait at least 6 months before getting a new dog, all the while continue disinfecting inside and outside.

Step 4
Make sure your new dog has all its shots. It will still be at risk.

Understanding your environment is the most important.

  1. Did the dog live in your home?
  2. If so, you will need to disinfect your home completely.
  3. Throw away all toys, bedding, food dishes, and other items you had for your other dog. That includes collar and leash too. They say you can disinfect these, but it really isn't that safe if you want another dog so soon.

  5. Disinfect your home with bleach. It is one part bleach to 30 parts water. Use a spray bottle and clean the areas in your home that the dog was in. You will need clean all your floors, carpets, and throw rugs.
  6. I would suggest to clean your home 3 or 4 times with bleach before brining a new puppy into your home.
  7. Before this puppy arrives in your home make sure it is fully vaccinated. The first vaccination is for parvo. The vet told me that after the first vaccination it is not protected for 24 to 48 hours.
  8. Normally it is a series of shots that are given every two weeks. The first shots are given, two weeks later the second, and two weeks after this the third. I would keep the dog in another location until it has had all it's vaccinations.
  9. During this time keep cleaning your home every few days with bleach mixed with water. The cleaner your home is the better your chances are the new puppy won't get parvo.

  11. Was the dog in your yard?
  12. If the dog was in he yard you will need to spray your entire yard with bleach and water. This is very important because the virus can live in your yard for up to a year.
  13. I would also spend the time to spray the yard every few days before you brought the new puppy home.
  14. When the puppy is young I would also limit the time he was in the yard. At first you can take the dog out for walk to use the toilet. Or you can train the dog to use puppy pads or even crate train the dog.

This is a very dangerous virus and it is so easily passed from one animal to another. If you walk in an area that another dog was sick and had this virus you carry home this virus on your shoes.

So be careful with this new puppy and find him a good place to stay while he is being vaccinated and before bringing him home. This way you can rest easier that this puppy won't get sick.

If you notice any change in this puppy after bringing hime home get him to the vet immediately. He could have the virus also.

I just lost a puppy to Parvo last night and I want to get another puppy. If i cleaned my entire house with bleach including the yard and the pup is FULLY vaccinated can the new pup still catch Parvo even if completely vaccinated? I can't go through what I did with my poor baby again. He survived for 10 days and seemed to be getting better each day then all of a sudden out of nowhere he passed. I IV fed him every day and cared for him best i could but this caused a huge bond and I'm completely heartbroken. Please help.
