Getting Used to New Dentures?

I've had dentures for a month. I'm miserable; how can I possibly get used to them? After a car accident I broke my teeth and suffered major pain. I thought this long road was over.

I find it miserable and awkward to eat. I have only had them for a month. I had my remaining teeth removed almost six months ago. My dentist told me my bone still needed to shrink way more than it had.

My insurance didn't cover the bone scrape and I couldn't hide out any more. Now the top plate hurts going over my gums. Taking them off is a pure agony. Putting them on hurts, but not as bad while having them on is painful. The dentist did say I had to let my bone shrink so I'm afraid if I adjust them too much then they will be too loose. I already went back and it isn't as bad, but still it takes me like 5 minutes to get the top ones out.

I don't use the paste up top. But the back top flops forward. Also, the dentist said that I could tell them (the lab) what I like and do not like about them. The teeth are much longer than my natural teeth were, these are way bigger. So it looks like I went from tiny to long Julia Roberts teeth. They are beautiful, but my top lip can't wrap around my top teeth. My kids think they look odd. Now I told my dentist this before the final ones were made and he said no that's how they should be. Now the more I don't like it, he said I had my chance to change it.

Eating hurts and all the food gets stuck. There comes a time where I have to eat and I can't; it hurts and is very unenjoyable. I can't wait to return home to remove them. I can't stand the way they feel on the roof of my mouth. How do I get use to them? I know some people who never take them out, can eat anything, and never have an issue. How can I feel better? Please help me. I'm in misery. Will it get better? I can talk better with them. I look better with healthy teeth, but it looks like I have something in my mouth. When or what can I do to live my life happy with these teeth? My kids should see their mom with beautiful teeth. So at a young age I've been in pain, with infections, etc. for years. I can't afford implants. I thought this pain was over. Please any advice will do.

Both the Colgate and Fixodent website say it takes about 30 days to get used to new dentures. You have to cut your food into very small pieces and chew on both sides. Try the suggestions for two weeks. If, after that time, you see no improvement, return to the dentist. There are state boards that you can complain to; everyone has to answer to someone.

If the dentist needs to adjust or make a new set, that is his responsibility. Be persistent!

Thank you for you for your reply.. my thing is that this place is the type of place that they take in new dentist all the time I've had six different dentist
But one that had do the making of the dentures. He's one of the better ones but the teeth them self are to big up top. I really need to get use to reading on both sides. And the darn top of my mouth... The top plate just gets to me... I wish it could be thinner...

When I told him the teeth are top big and showed him a picture he said it's too late for pictures.. he said "maybe I can file the teeth down.. but they look like when they were made they just placed the teeth on top of the gum... Is there a difference between men and womens teeth... I would think they would've taken the x-rays and worked with that.. thanks for ur help!

It is difficult to follow your procedure from beginning to end but it would seem that you have been going to the same dentist from beginning to present time correct?

I do not believe your dentist (or their staff) have been completely honest with you about all of the procedures and time frames but your constant pain seems to be the biggest problem.

The dentist is probably not receiving any more funds for any time spent with you or for any services you may need, so they will be very reluctant to keep seeing you for any reason.

I have listed some links that, if forms are completed, you may be able to get some help with your problems:
The first link is just for information but has a lot of good answers:

Thank you for your information.
My dentist would see me anytime.. I'm scared that if I keep having him drill them that when my bone shrinks they will not fit right. I also told him when the wax ones came in that the teeth were 3 times bigger then my real teeth. I look funny and ur right In in pain

I have no personal experience with dentures but I do have many friends that have full and partial dentures and it is rare that I have heard of anyone having this much trouble.

Some have experienced pain and discomfort at different times but most of this soon goes away - usually after several productive trips to their dentist.

I just cannot help but feel that you need to see another dentist that may either be able to help you or at least tell you why they cannot do anything with your present set.

You may have to go to someone else for help - like the sites I listed before.

I sincerely hope you will find a solution soon.

Its time for a new dentist. The denture teeth should be the same size as your natural teeth were, unless they were deformed. I have never heard of "bone shrinking". Tissue swells and "shrinks" when the swelling goes down, but I don't think that is common for bone.

Hi, I relate to your problem. I'm on my third dentist. What I can say may not be helpful but I'll still say it. Now days and even earlier days
I've found that dentists and doctors don't really care. They want to do what they get money for and after that they might as well leave town. That's as much help you'll because after the main job they don't want to be bothered because they aren't getting paid to make it right. Doctors are just as bad, etc. I have finally learned that the only thing I can do, because I'm having a problem also, is don't stop going there until they do what they are supposed to do. Finish the job and do it right!!!!!!! All the "crap" they tell you for the most part is just to make you go away. It's the dentist! Just keep telling him they aren't right and you'll have to keep coming back until they are right.

Get a juicer and start juicing. It's very good for you. Fresh fruits and veggies. You can get recipe book for juicing. I just got upper dentures and I hate eating now. But I already didn't eat meat and juice a lot so that helps. I think you'll like it.

I has similar feelings about my upper plate. I could not press my lips together to put on lipstick or chapstick. Drinking from a straw was awkward and I felt buck toothed. My dentist was able to grind down the top front portion of my denture and made a huge difference! I think I will have it whittled down a little more still, but so much of an improvement. I hope this helps!!

It will take time to adjust with dentures. Bcz first your body has to accept this foreign body and after some time ur body starts accept this and u start feeling comfort. Next thing is u and ur family should accept the changes in ur mouth and ur face. Nothing can do. Myself also in same situation and myand my family mentally prepared to accept fate.
