House Training a Yorkie Puppy?

I am a new Yorkie mom. My male Yorkie will be home in two weeks. I'm not sure the best way to potty train him when he comes home. I live in a house with a front and back yard. So should I pee pad train my Yorkie or train him to go on the grass in the backyard?

I am a long time dachshund mom and I will warn you, small dogs take a long time to potty train and crate training is the best method I have used and it is best when you start them from day one.

It takes lots of patience and consistency and praise. NEVER yell as it sets them back and the process takes longer. Praise is the best thing and ignore if they have an accident.Seriously, it sounds counter intuitive, but if you yell at them, they have no clue why and it just frightens them and makes it harder to train them as they fear you

There are tons of videos out there on it, so I would check out YouTube and talk to your vet about his/her best recommendations.

My first dachshund was crate trained and only went outside from day one, but I got her as a puppy. My current boy came to us as a rescue and we did crate training but had to incorporate paper training indoors (like pee pads) because he got frequent UTI's and had colitis and often he could not hold it all day when we were at work (this was after the crate training and when he had the run of the back of the house). He also is very sensitive to cold and can't handle snow on his paws so we have to have an indoor area for in the winter.

There are lots of good ways to do that that don't cause the house to smell. We use a thick old shower curtain on the floor, then layers of newspaper that get changed at every use. The pads were too small for him as he liked to walk and go...so this worked for us.

It is best from my experience to train them right away to go outside to pee and poo. I think pee pad training is fine but in the end it is rather messy for me. I have had more than one small dog and immediately I take them outside to go pee and poo. I just wait for 30 minutes after they eat and then go out in the yard with them and walk around.

It took me a bit of time with one of them because he loved my company in the yard when he went pee and poo. Normally it is rather quick unless you have a dog that just wants you to be there when they pee and poo all the time.

The best way to train a puppy is crate training because then you have control over their movements and it is easy to train when you are absent or at night. Animals, even ones that are hard to train, are loath to 'go' in their sleeping quarters, which is why this works well.

After that, I would transition him to outside as soon as possible.
