How Do I Stop My Dog from Running Off?

I have a Pit Bull that is so loving and affectionate with myself and 4 grandchildren, but every time he catches the door open, he bolts out of it and will not come back by being called. I have to go get him in my car telling him to "let's go for a ride."

He will go from house to house trying to fight other dogs. I just don't know what to do with him, he minds so good when he's inside and even lets my cat sleep on his back, but will try to attack other cats or dogs. What should I do because I really don't want to give him up?

I, personally, think you are radically speaking; sitting on a time bomb that could go off at any time.
There are thousands of online courses, videos, etc telling you how to stop your dog from running away but how many of those 'course' can you actually do? Most lessons are done in an open area and it's very clear that you cannot do that due to the problem he has with other animals.

What would happen if he encounters a mother and child out walking their dog? A fight? What if the mother or child gets in the way trying to protect their dog?
Of course, this is a dramatic example but we all know it could happen. He could be put down if he just attacks another dog as this would be considered a dangerous act.
I do not know where you live but there are very few places that do not have 'lease laws' so that would be another violation.
I know that you probably have a vet and most likely if you tell the vet what is really happening they can recommend a physical training set-up somewhere close by that can train and keep your dog until they are sure he is not a danger to other pets or people.
I know this will be an expense but I sincerely hope you will consider this action before there is a problem that cannot be 'fixed'.

Just wanted to add this information:
Information is not current but I checked current (2017 latest report).
"The CDC reports that between 1979 and 1998, Pit Bulls were responsible for more human deaths than any other breed. Pit Bull bites are likely to be more severe, and put victims at higher risk of infection, disability or disfigurement.

Children and the elderly are more at risk of attack than adults. For that reason, more than twelve countries have implemented restrictions or outright bans on Pit Bulls."

I have been watching many training videos for dogs recently because I have too many here and at times it is overwhelming. From what you are describing the dog is has social problems if it wants to fight all the time with other dogs. I am not sure if you take the dog out for walks enough and allow him to socialize with other dogs. This could be one of your major issues. The dog needs some training and it will take time to do this one and you need to keep up with the training in order for it to work. The one YouTube channel that has really helped me so much training my dogs is called It's me or the dogs YouTube channel. Here is the link. www.youtube.com/.../UCKCKzDbSsAYMGp2BccEaRUw

Victoria is quite good and will give you some wonderful tips to help you train your dog at home. One thing is for sure don't buy a shock mat to put at the front door or even a shock color this is very dangerous for the dog and can hurt them badly.

Other than this you may need to hire a private trainer but do a lot of research before you pay the money.

Victoria has a lot of techniques that you can use at home with a clicker or even a whistle to help train the dog yourself. Take a look at some of her videos and see what she does when this happens. I just watched several videos recently about this problem. Your dog is an active dog and needs a lot of exercises and I don't think he is getting enough personally.

It sounds like he needs to be taught to stay put and leached . This behavior is going to lead into trouble. He is waiting for the chance. The whole family is going to need to be more cautious and watch him better, if not , training is a must.

And lastly maybe a different type of door/ or door rules.

I do keep him leashed when he goes to potty and when he is outside . some times he will get himself out of his collar and take off as well as bolting out the door. what would be the best way to teach him to come back to me when I call him ?
