Pair of crutches up against a cement wall.To make crutches more comfortable, purchase silicone gel pads (the type that fits into shoes) and secure with duct tape over the crutch pads.

As an RN, I'd like to gently remind anyone using crutches that the top of the crutch shouldn't contact the underarm, this can cause nerve damage in the arms because of the pressure of the weight of your body as you are using the crutches. Instead, pad the hand-grips. Be sure to shorten the crutches enough so that the top of the crutch clears the armpit area by about two inches. The most important length is from the hand grips downward to measure, stand straight, with your hands in the crutch-holding position and your forearms straight with your elbows locked. Adjust the hand-grip upward or downward (which might mean adjusting the length of the crutch) until you can support your weight on your palms without having the top of the crutches touch your armpit. Your forearms should be straight.
