Identifying a Cane Chair?

February 22, 2022

An old wooden chair with a rattan seat.I purchased this chair at a local auction recently, with the intention to resell. however, I have researched the chair for more general information and fair pricing information and cannot seem to find any like it online, no exact matches or even any chairs that share more than one similar detail or distinction with this chair.

I am interested to know more about its age and if it is a mass-produced chair, or one with a more unique history and character. I find some of the details charming and not duplicated in other chair styles that I have looked at online. Does anyone recognize the wood used, the style or the person or brand that made of this chair and possibly the age of production? Thank you!

I couldn't find a chair that looks exactly like your chair. I found an antique small oak pressed back caned seat rocking chair that looks like your chair but is a rocking chair www.ebay.com/.../362705756366

The price is $ 135.
The price of a vintage Victorian cane seat chair in good condition is $ 50 www.aptdeco.com/.../vintage-victorian-press-back-chair...
It has pressed back and a leafy scalloped crest above turned spindles. There are no visible maker's marks.

Literally asking for a friend. Her father-in-law has two of these chairs. She is thinking about donating them, but I suggested letting me determine how old and/or desirable they might be.

Her father in law is 85 and he got them from older relatives. They seem to resemble Eastlake, but I'm having no luck identifying them. Thanks for any leads you can share.

It is always difficult to try and do research on furniture with just a picture and with one half picture it would be almost impossible.
Without a brand name and pictures it is very difficult to find an item that is even similar.

I can only suggest you take some good pictures - one of both chairs, then only one chair - a full front and back - looking straight at the chair, full picture of side of one chair, picture looking down at cane bottom, picture of underside of chair.

This may be a lot of trouble but if you post these pictures to the group sites listed below, someone will be able to tell you a great deal about these chairs. I'm only recommending this because the chairs could be valuable.

Cane-backed chairs were popular in the 1960s. You will have to look under the chair to see the manufacturer
