Identifying a Houseplant?

Identifying a Houseplant - tall plant with long serrated leavesThis quickly growing plant was given to me by a patient and I have no idea what it is. It now has what look like little babies at the end of some of its leaves. The leaves are thick like a succulent.

Mother of Thousands or Mother of Millions?
Seems most people think they are the one and the same but one thing for sure - they are poisonous so keep away from pets. They are also considered invasive so keep a check on the "babies".

  • I believe both plants are considered to be from the Kalanchoe family (?) so they are easy to grow and care for.
  • Here are some comments from a university web site (as well as other sites):
  • Both Mother of Thousands and Mother of Millions are poisonous.
  • Mother of Millions, on the other hand, has very narrow leaves. Youll notice that it has 4 leaves that all grow from the same place on the stem (the node). These dont alternate like the Mother of Thousands. The plantlets on these leaves only grow at the end of the leaf, near the tip.

Usually there are between 2-4 babies on each leaf. Mother of Millions is considered a noxious weed in parts of Australia and Africa because of its rapid growth and spreading, in even the most adverse conditions.
  • The final difference in these two Mothers are the behaviors of their growth. Mother of Thousands usually has a central, single stalk that grows up towards sunlight. It will often fall over due to the weight of its heavy leaves, and continue growing. Mother of Millions often has several stalks rising from the same plant. While they primarily grow upwards, they can form bush-like patches.

Either way, they are fascinating plants and easy to care for

Hello !
It is a kalanchoe from the crassula family and from the color of the soil on the picture I can tell you that it has received too much water and that you should quickly put it in a pot where the water will not stagnate as when its roots are in damp soil crassula and kalanchoe die very quickly. They are native to Australia and South Africa and so fore used to dryness and warmth. Check for the conditions and cares they need. You don't need to first find out which kalanchoe it is as nearly all crassulla has the same needs.
